Well a friend of mine bought a 01 340 Dancer that was a local boat with 357 hours on it. He had the boat completely gone through and the bottom painted before he took delivery. They finally dropped it in the water Tuesday and the starboard motor will not fire. he is not getting any fuel to the MPI. He swapped the fuel regulator and even tried a pump from the regulator to the motor and nothing. The other problem is that his fresh water pump keeps cycling on every 10 seconds or so even if he is not running water at all. No leaks that we can tell so far. The pump just wants to cycle on. Any ideas on these two problems would be a big help.

Thanks
Steve

The water pump is one of three things, air in the lines, a small leak, or faulty pressure switch.

Regarding the engine, if you have verified fuel flow through the pump? How much pressure are you getting at the fuel rails? If all else fails I'd put a diagnostic tool on the engine and see what it says.

my water pump would cycle a little less frequently than that. I pulled the pump apart to find one of the magnets pulled loose from the casing and was riding on the rotor. I cleaned it up and re-attached it. No problems since. I like to tinker...

Steve, Did your friend get his boat running... If so, what was the problem...

That lil black o-ring on the water fill cap can cause a small leak like you described. In a pinch, a little vasoline on it will fix it right up.

Yes...The switch to the fuel valve was bad. The rest of the stuff has been on hold and a few other things have surfaced. he asked me to help him out while I am working on my boat tomorrow.

1-No water pump pressure at all

2-The generator on the top bank kicks breakers everytime you turn anything on other then a/c

3-The toilet will not flush at all

4-top step to cabin broke off

5-running light not working

6-anchor light missing bulb and lens

7-Ran a ground last weekend during a bad storm. Thinks it's no big deal. They just got out and pushed the boat off the rocks and kept going. I have a hard time believing that the guy broke anchor and blew into the rocks and everything is ok.

I named him "Full Throttle" he knows one speed...wide open

Wow... I would not know where to begin, but I would consider trading the boat in for a smaller boat if I were him... I havd OCD when it comes to things not working on the boat... Everything must work, and fortunately, the only thing that does not work on my boat, is my trumpet horn, but since it is a redundant horn, my wife does let me replace it...

We all know that the maintenance of a boat is very critical for our enjoyment and safety on the water. I view my boat as a complicated set of systems working in concert. We enjoy a very expensive yet beautiful and enjoyable machine. To take a heavy twin engine machine and operate at full throttle as a normal course of business is asking for trouble. This guy needs deep pockets. Just for the fuel.

My 2 cents.

Is your friend for real? Geeze....he need to dive down and make sure that all is fine, as well as doing detailed performance test to make sure he didn't bend the pros or shafts.

He had the boat completely gone through

Exactly who "went through" this boat - Stevie Wonder and Helen Keller?

today I fixed his step that had fallen off. I had to cut a new L bracket out of aluminum and set and epoxy nuts in the step. Then I stuck the entire step back down with a 2 part appoxy. I think I found his water leak after I found several pieces of full paper towels stuck in the toilet. His answer for that was "we had no toilet paper" I made him stick his hand in the toilet and un clog the bowl. His port side running light is fixed but the starboard side is very week. I will fix that tomorrow. I have to figure out what kind of bulbs his anchor lights take. It is missing the lens and is covered in rust and corrosion. Anyone know what kind of bulbs that takes? The water leak is a cold water line that has broke. thank godness that I boughtextra fittings when I ordered some for my 340. His generator is another story. I am not sure what in the hell is going on with that. He is also missing his cabin mid bearth table and pole. I have to find him all new canvas as well. he paid 75k for that boat. I offered him my boat for 80k. I bet he said a hundred times today that he wished he bought my boat. kind of felt sorry for him. He has over 80 in the boat and he wants me to do the 7k in upgrades that to his boat that I have done on my boat. he is going to have 90 k in this boat when he is done.

Sounds to me like he paid a premium for some reason. A good clean 340 in the same years right now is probably no more than 75 or 80 (which sucks, but is true), from a dealer no less. Something that needs this much work, which is either not from a dealer or from a dealer who saw more work than they wanted, should have been much less.

But - water under the bridge now.

steve34dancer/chumbley--i'm affraid your right, once you step into a situation like this, you really have no way out other then to fix the boat properly--i learned years ago --once you hit anything on the bottom--hullout ,and inspect !someone w/a little knowledge of boats won't buy into a mess of this sorts, and the poor guy that owns it is going to learn patience, sted fast--be thankful he dosn't have a pilots license--good luck on the project steve-
