Follow the 650FLY on Her Journey Back to Florida

I know Rusty and you are aware, Beaufort Inlet is big and Wrightsville is doable. For those that might consider this trip in the future you can by-pass all those bridges, if conditions allow, by going outside.

Where did you guys stay in BelHaven? Dowry Creek Marina is a good stop.

What's it like having someone else aboard?

Tomorrow is showing 4'-6' 5sec Per from the S 20kntwinds from SW.........TSTMS & Scattered Showers

Safe trip guys, you're making good time....

Load some pictures already. It's been like 4 days. While you're sitting there waiting for a bridge you have plenty of time to finger poke a post and upload from your iphone.

To answer Tim's query about crew/staffing………Rusty and I are still laughing at that ……….It is only Rusty and me. This isn't a cruise; it is a working trip. The 650 is a new boat that will be evaluated then sold to a retail customer so we are not cooking aboard. Breakfast doesn't exist and lunch is usually cold leftovers from previous dinners, water or diet Coke. We do not run at night and prefer to get into a marina before closing so we can fuel up and get a decent dinner at a nearby restaurant. Fueling means taking on roughly 800 gal of diesel and is a 30-45 minute process, so dinner is usually late. Also, it's just me and Rusty here……we both navigate…..the one running the boat at the time via the Raymarine GS15 plotters; the other parallels with paper charts and the waterway guide, whoever is closest or not running the boat handles the lines, we do the fueling, we pump out the head, we wash down the boat (thank goodness for today's rain!) and we neither one are messy travelers because we have to keep the boat clean in case someone wants to see it. Managing the boat is no more than any of us do on our own boats and I find the systems to be complex, but once you grasp what is going on, she is easier to manage than most older Sea Rays.

Sounds like Frank is trying to tell us that he and Rusty are "roughing it". I'm feeling pretty bad for them.

in all seriousness, long trips can be physically and mentally draining. Staying mentally alert and focused day in, day out can be tough. Afterall, miss one log, crab pot or marker and things can go to he!! pretty quick.

I'm glad to hear you're keeping the boat in tip top shape Frank cuz if I decide to buy it, I want those heads showroom spotless.

My guess is they started moving early this morning and they are in the ICW.

TODAY

SW WINDS 15 TO 25 KT...BECOMING 10 TO 20 KT LATE. SEAS 4 TO 7 FT. HIGHEST WINDS AND SEAS NE. SHOWERS AND TSTMS.

I think they can make Charleston.

The weather looks better tomorrow.

We ran to the Cape Fear inlet in the ICW, then came outside there. Was a long day…….we left the Wrightsville Beach marina before 7, had 25kt winds from the SW all day. Seas started at about 4-7 but calmed as we headed south and ended at something like 3-4. The biggest challenge so far has been the inaccurate chart data and varying depths in the ICW above Cape Fear. You can be running along in 14 ft of water and glance at the MFD and find that you are in the marked channel but in 4.0 ft. Boating with Rusty is always a treat and nearly always educational. Today's lesson was a chant and how to use it to get to deeper water…….."Find Water; Find Water; Find water, Find Water………"then sure enough if you zig-zag enough, you eventually "find water".

We made it to Charleston City Marina about 4:15, fueled the boat….another 600 gal…..and I just finished washing the boat AND IT IS RAINING!

Tomorrow we are headed to St. Augustine……early. I'll give the photos another try after dinner.

I can see you standing on the back of the boat.

Guessing they will be offshore tomorrow. Conditions should be better and St. Augustine is a bit of a haul. They won't make it inside.

Frank, it always rains after you wash! Rusty's chant "Find water, find water"...well.... you found water from above.

That's boating on Barnegat Bay every day. Except it's 6'...6'....6'....2.4'....3.1'.....6'...5', REPEAT

Frank likes those old school big umbrellas.

They're a cute couple.

Big Brother is ALWAYS watching.

Well guys, what would you have me do to keep the rain off my bald head as we walk to the restaurant……………wait, I know, I could be like Mike and wear a floppy hat like every 80 year old retired school teacher in a bloboat that we've passed headed North this week.

That's crazy that you can watch them on a web cam... Safe travels guys would love to be there with you!
