Jacob Runyan, of the Cleveland suburb of Broadview Heights, and his fishing partner, Chase Cominsky, of Hermitage, Pa., were disqualified from the championship event of the Lake Erie Walleye Trail tournament on Friday when the fish they turned in as their catch were found to have lead weights inside of them.

My BIL used to fish in professional tournaments. Apparently the use of small lead weights in not uncommon. But not anywhere close to the extent these guys did.

Saw this on the local news tonight and Jacob was actually one of my wifes former students. His dad is a maintenance man where my one step-son works. I never met the kid but we are pretty close to Hermitage. My daughter owns 2 rentals in the Sharon/Hermitage area. Jacob went to school in New Castle, PA. I think he graduated 2 years ago

I'll check with my wife later to see if there is any chatter at her school about it. Will ask my step-son if Jacobs dad has said anything to him

That there is a chance that criminal charges may be brought against these guys makes my props hit rocks.

Do they deserve it? Yeah, but.

It makes my blood boil when criminal prosecution resources are used to enforce a sport.

Some poor person living in the hood doesn’t know who killed their loved one and our legal system is going to dedicate resources to crap like this infuriates me.

I think all cheating in sports scandals should be dealt with within the governing body of that sport. That some of their people cheated is NOT my f’n problem.

Asked my wife and she said she hasn't heard any chatter but she works at a vo-tech that only has 10-12th graders so the students there today have likely never met Jacob. Nothing from any teachers that she has heard. Haven't talked to my step-son yet.

So are you good with a couple of guys defrauding others out of $300,000 from their investment accounts? That is what this is, fraud, and big money fraud. This is not a rules violation, it is fraud to convert others money. There is a difference.

Yep, don’t want my tax dollars spent enforcing a sport.
Not my problem.
I also don’t want a convicted murderer being let out of prison to make room for this bullshit.

If you steal from a bank or steal from an insurance company or steal from a sponsor of a sporting event …. What’s the difference?…. You are stealing peoples money….. In my world you should be convicted of the crime

I agree to not agree with you my friend.

Edit: I don’t disagree that they deserve it.
I just don’t want my tax dollars and criminal prosecution resources tied up on it.

Are you serious? Sports are a business. This is no different that stealing or defrauding a business.

Would it be your problem is someone defrauded the owner where you work?

And that will never happen.

I get what your saying, but where to you draw the line?
Should someone whose boat gets stolen not worry because it's not a murder?

No different then lance armstrong… he stole from the postal service but got no jail time…. But the government decided that…. not the Tour de France
Actually Lance Armstrong’s sponsors all reaped the benefits of sponsoring him before he got caught and none of them really ended up having to pay anything back. Their images weren’t tarnished as a result of his actions.
In fact who ever heard of Trek bicycles before Lance Armstrong? I’m pretty sure they benefited into the billions and actually several other manufacturers of bicycles.
Cycling in the US today is a thousand times bigger than it was before Lance’s rein and he is the primary reason. His wins were the catalyst and that business is still growing more and faster every day.

I have around 150 employees, have been self employed almost my entire life and I have never attempted to prosecute any employee for theft.
Definitely not that it hasn’t happened and not that ones who have stolen from me didn’t deserve it. My reasons are 3 fold.
1. I’m not going to waste taxpayer resources on my problem.
2. The time I would spend dealing with it is worth way more focused on business and going forward.
3. If they got the right lawyer and weren’t convicted of the theft they could sue my ass off.
