First taste of humble pie

Is it just me or is anyone else wondering how a tow line gets caught in a prop? Any tow line should be polypropylene so it won't sink below the surface and...get wrapped up in a prop.

Not trying to insult anybody, just confused.

Like I said, story in itself, friends boat had broken down, and was being blown in towards moored boats, quickly hooked up a line, his line, which was 1", as I took up the slack, his rope obviously wasnt good, snapped and flew strihght under the swim platform, I have legs, so straight around the props. And obviously the snap point was the only weak point on the rope..........sheesh..........as it wrapped around both props and stalled the motors.

In regards to floating, some of these ropes will float on the surface or just under it.

There was a game fishing boat out of Sydney the year before last about 20Miles out, he managed to pick up a 5 or 6m length which went around both props and stall it. There was a 3M swell running and he was past the Continental Shelf. Too deep to even consider an anchor. Too rough to contemplate going over, so whilst heading towards that antartic at a 4-5 knot drift they had a couple of hours wait for the Water Police to get out to them.

Humble pie or not, I’m glad you are OK and made it back without further incident. As usual, I’ve learned something on this forum, thanks for posting all the replies for the rest of us too! I think this can happen to anyone, and your advise all makes sense.

Every time a rope is in the water my anxiety level goes up 10 fold. Sounds like you managed it; You live and you learn.

We have crab pots here set out off the cost about 1 km, they use the smallest float markers known to man, and in a couple of metres of swell. Your on top of them before you see them.

Thanks for all the replies... Went and tried to take a look at the prop... It's amazing how even with a mask could only see a couple inches in the murky water.,, . But soon as I got in the water something brushed up against my leg..lol probably just a fish .but I was sure a snake or alligator was gonna get me... Figured if I was actually under the boat and that happened I could panic and that could cause problems lol

so got a diver looking at it now
hopefully no serious damage

A friend of mine did the same as you. He bent the shafts and struts. I would have the boat hauled and verify.

This exact scenario happened to me on my maiden voyage coming from Destin, FL going to N'awlins :smt013

You should get your lady comfortable with helping out. I usually ask the wife to sit up front while I pull anchor just to make sure the windlass is feeding correctly as I throttle toward the anchor. Or I'll pull the line by hand to get the boat over the anchor and then take up the line with the windlass. The latter is sometimes obviously not an option.

Hey guys so the diver was able to cut the rope
took him about an hour !

wrapped around both props
but lucky no damage to props or shafts ...mild damage to trim tab

than you for whoever recommended the diver.. The mess of rope he pulled up was amazing..I would never been able to do it myself

It's kind of funny the water is so murky in a location called Clear Lake Tx.
