fender basket placement.....

i am planning to install baskets on the bow rail this WE to hold my four 10" fenders....i have seen pics of boats with the baskets mounted inside of the rail and outside of the rail...my first thought is that mouting them outside of the rail opens up the flat deck space for walking and eliminates any tripping hazzard...

anyone have an opinion as to why one mounting method is favored over the other?...

thanks...

These are what I use to keep them suspended from my rails in the bow:

One on each side of each fender to keep them hanging vertically.

I use the 10" ones for safer rafting so they are rather large.

i also have 10" fenders and like this size for this size boat....

I just read a nice article about fender basket placement. They found that most folks place them in a spot that blocks the nav lights. After checking mine the other night I found that mine did just that. I moved them today. I just thought I should add that

excellent point....not sure i would have thought about that...thanks for sharing...

My husband's 6' 1" too, so I think you'll be fine. Our son and son-in-law are an inch shorter and they don't have any issues either. I sure wouldn't sell them, they sound llike a good set up you bought.

good to know....it sounds like this is one of those 'personal opinion' things where they work OK for some folks and some don't like them....

All these types of clips are ok, but honestly I've found a simple clove hitch is easiest for hanging fenders from a rail.

Cliff - I think you will be fine with the baskets, sounds like you might not have any other options. If you like I can stop by Saturday and consult -- probably be a 3 beer project.

My 300DA had baskets at the second stanchion from the pulpit when I got it, and First Mate and I are very short (5'4" and 4'9"), but we don't have major issues with visibility....our bigger challenge is the original canvas package that meets the windshield, limiting the vertical field of vision. It may be an adjustment going from a bow clear of objects to closing it in a bit, but if the Admiral's happy, that's what counts, right? :)

My view is in the picture I posted at #3... What's all this complaining about "blocking my view"?

I found, when I owned baskets, when coming on plane, due to the bow rise, the baskets did obstruct my view... So do my kayaks on the bow... We keep most of our 10" fenders in the trunk. If it is raining, and you have to sit with your canvas up, anyting on your bow will obstruct your view....

good points Rod....we don't spend much time on plane which will help in our situation....
