What's up everyone, I just joined the forum so forgive me if I sound like a noob.

I just wanted to know if I was given a fair price for a boat I'm looking to buy. It's a 2001 240 Sundeck with 203hrs on it in great condition. All the leather is mint and there are brand new carpets and bmini top. The only things I found wrong were some rust in the storage compartments and weathering on some of the chrome components. The hull also needs to be re-painted.

Anyway, the dealer wants to charge me $19,500.00 for it and an additional $2,500.00 for a 3 year warranty bringing the grand total to $22,000.00. Is this a good deal, or am I being ripped off? Any info/help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The engine size & drive, along with any maintenance records may help you better determine the boat's value. It sounds to me like the boat may have sat out in the weather. (New top, carpet & why does the hull need repainting). Was the boat winterized? A full survey may be in order to among other things, verify that all electrical components are functioning. Some more information would help other more experienced guys chime in. The price sounds a little high to me but search the internet for some comparisons.

After doing some quick searches, what the dealer is asking is in par with everything else. This boat was $70K new, so you are getting 50K savings off a new boat, what more could you want?
Anyone pay 70k for that boat new must have been nuts. There isn't enough info to even judge the value of this boat.

When I was shopping, the dealers all seemed to be way over-priced. I found a better boat for half of the dealer's best price. The dealers have more obligation after the sale, and need to cover their overheads. If you buy well from a private seller, you can do better. It is safer at the dealers because they typically have their mechanics go through the boat before they sell it.

I would never buy a extended warranty on a boat . I had one on 2002 32 dancer purchased in may 2007 3 year contract cost 5,995 had trouble with the transmission had it repaired at searay dealer . warranty company said it was normal wear & tear they paid zip . I paid 3,700 for repair plus 5,995 for warranty for a total cost of 9,695 . which when you think about it on a 5 year old boat everthing is normal ware &tear

I think it depends on the warranty company. When I purchased my 2000 340, the origina owner had purchased a 5 year extended warranty when they bought the boat new. It transferred to me with the purchase. I paid for nothing except normal maintenance items such as oil changes, impellers, batteries and bulbs for the first 4 years I owned the boat.

As for purchasing from a dealer - yes it will probably be more expensive. It's probably also safer and easier. You don't have to run all over, they will coordinate sea trials, they do the registration, they can arrange financing, etc. A dealer will typically wholesale the bad stuff and only resale things they want their name on. The key is to use a reputable dealer - as there are always exceptions.

There are some pretty good threads on extended warranties...you may want to review them. Opinions vary and views from both sides are pretty well represented.

I completely get your concern about getting a fair price. The problem though is that "fair" is subjective. There are people on this forum for whom price is EVERYTHING. They want to be sure they have paid the absolute least for anything, and are prepared to accept the risks that go along with that strategy. Others place a higher premium on the value of time or perceived quality, and pay for convenience and attention to detail. (I paid around $60k for our 2008 240SD, and know a number of people who bought expensive boats in early 2000 that are worth much less than their loan...so a list of $70k for yours doesn't seem completely out of bounds)

Boats are a leisure investment, not a financial one. I guarantee that, no matter what you pay, somebody is going to get the exact same boat cheaper and rag you about it. However, no matter what you pay, someone else either paid more or will. What is really important is the metric for you and your family. Does the boat meet your needs? Is the price in your budget? The pricing you outlined seems a little high for private party, and about right for a dealer, but a private party may not have access to warranty or service or financing...and those things have a cost as well.

Sorry to ramble, but on a used boat...its about value, not price.

Wow! Our 2005 240, which had every option but Vacu-flush listed for $56K in September 2004. I can't believe the list price dropped $14K in 4 years...Oh, and the hull needs repainting? How about compounding and wax?

Extended warranty - Paid $750 for a 2 year warranty on the 240, and it covered the $1,800 ECM, so I was up $1,100.

I'm still confused on this hull painting thing....are we talking "hull" as in below the rubrail or do you mean bottom paint?

Yes, I meant the bottom paint. Here is some more detailed information on the boat:

Its a great boat, you will love it... I still think 20K out the door with bottom paint, warentee, tax, and full tank of gas...

Why so few hours? Check the maintenance records, even if it was not used still need to perform the maintenance. IMHO - Jedi hit the nail on head about price.

We recently purchased a 2003 240 Sundeck, 260 hours looks and runs like new. Ours has the 5.0 Liter MPI. It also had some warranty left from Sea Ray Legacy till December 2011. We paid $ 21,500 no trailer.

I think 20k with extended warranty if you are so inclined is fair - but have them detail the boat as well - fix the cosmetic issues & bottom paint. It sounds as if you are new to boating - ask them to provide a captain to orient you to the boat for the day.
