Eye surgery went very wrong

Would have been nice if he would have just told us that in this thread, or had someone do it for him. So all we can do is guess to his condition.

I emailed his business address about 10 days ago out of genuine concern. Never heard back. Figured the worst. At least now I know not to bother him again since he needs his space. How were we to know?

Gunn,

I agree. Presentation started this thread and many were very concerned. It would have been nice if he had someone tell us he's alive and struggling. I'm sure it wouldn't be my top priority either but when you put it out there you may want to bring it back.

Tonka,
Thanks for the update. I was worried that maybe he got a second procedure and didn't survive the anethesia. I have seen that before, several times.

I think he has his space. No ill will intended here on the forum. I wish him well with a full recovery.

Death related to anesthesia is about 5 deaths per million surgeries and you knew several of them? Now, some patients are at greater risk than others for anesthesia related mortality but the decision to have surgery is made because their condition will likely kill them if not corrected. Those patients likely make up a bulk of the deaths. "Healthy" patients undergoing "routine" procedure have much lower risk than 5/million. You either new some very sick people or have bad anesthesia care in your area!

Share your personal health related issues with thousands of strangers on a BOATING forum and then ignore them because you want your space? Anyway I do hope he's alright.

As hard as it is to believe, that is what we were told. One of my childhood friends mother died after Gall bladder surgery when I was young. The quote was "The surgery was successful but the patient didn't survive". The reason given was a bad reaction to the anesthesia. I am also a pediatric PT. One of my patients, who was ultimately going to pass prematurely, died way too early due to improper administration of I believe potassium during oral surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital. Those are the first two that I can specifically think of off of my head. I also have dealt with alot of very sick children over the years and seen many expire prematurely due to a myriad of conditions.

Now, I don't know Presentation personally so I have no knowledge of any possible co-morbidities that may contribute to an early death related to surgery or anesthesia. You may know differently. I am also curious where your information comes from. Could you please share the source that you are quoting? The research that I pulled up was much higher than your results but was primarily from other countries that are more transparent with their reporting. Those studies claimed that it was very difficult to predict the actual deaths related to anesthesia in the United States for a myriad of reasons. It seems to me that the number would be higher just based on the level of illness many patients have that require surgery in this country, life saving and otherwise.

But I do appreciate you calling me out on this and intimating that I am embellishing the facts for dramatic purpose. Well Done!!

Never said you embellished the facts. People makes statements like they are facts which often are not true. Now you are talking about two specific type cases. First your childhoods friend's mom. I assume that was a long time ago. Could have missed something on pre admission testing. Anesthesia mortality rates have decreased even from the 80s. If the doctor said "The surgery was successful but the patient didn't survive" they should lose their license. If a plane crashes on landing do we say it was a successful flight? The second case is a child. There are specific issues around anesthesia in children, but it sounds from you description like it was a medication error. That's another story.

Here is one article

I'm concerned too - But I think Pres should get a free pass on this one........While I would never share personel info like that on a public forum, I've got to believe the guy was really scared and confided in us as "friends" - He is a small business owner in a tough economy and got kicked in the nuts with this problem, so who knows whats going on in his life right now - I wish him and his family the best, and wish I knew how or if I could help in any way. I hope to see him return to our community soon.

Excellent post. None of here know what is going on, give him a break.

I hope the guy is alright, but frankly, it's none of our business. He posted something on here for support in a trying time, and now it has turned into an entitlement/need to know issue. If he wants to share then so be it. If he doesn't hope for the best and back off.

That being said hope all is well, or at a minimum getting well.

Told myself not to get in this one, but I'm sitting on my boat procrastinating my way through this drizzly Monday after a perfect weekend.

First, from the way I read his posts, I believe he was looking for information regarding his condition, not for any pen pals. Now certainly, I would seek a professional, not a bunch of boaters who nit-pick about everything...

Second, I have a good feeling he was told to shut up about his issues due to any potential litigations. Don't take it personal, it's a money thing...

Maybe I was mis-interpreted here. I have no malice at all on this one. Pres gets all the slack that he needs and deserves. My point was that some of us who have seen him around the sight just got concerned when he hadn't responded. I actually thought he died and was feeling bad for him and his family even though I don't know him personally. I wish nothing but the best for him, really, and look forward to seeing him post on here again in the future. That's all, nothing but best wishes!!

It's been over a year since Pres last logged in to CSR. He was an asset to the community and I personally miss his contributions. It is understandable that he may not wish to respond due to pending litigation, but does anybody know how he is doing?

I just did some investigation...I do know there is no open or closed litigation for his eye surgery. He is, however, going through a rough spot in life. I do not want to get into specifics, as it is not my place. I think it would be best if everyone just let this thread retire.
