extended warranty

funny how the dealer from another state uses the same phrase as my dealer "almost everyone purchases the extended warranty"

Not this dealer. I hope you're referring to someone else.

I saw your comment in that other thread... "Has any one ever bought this warranty on a new boat & had the warranty pay for itself?" You're looking at this warranty thing all wrong (although you've already seen a number of posts where it has paid for itself). You shouldn't buy a warranty with the hopes that it will pay for itself - a warranty is akin to insurance. It's there if you need it. If you never need it, well, you also didn't lose any boating time. I do understand the point about "getting your monies worth" - I'm a consumer, too - but the main purpose of a warranty is to cover you IF you have problems.

All that being said, I still stand behind my initial comment that some people like the added security that a warranty offers, and others don't feel it's enough to warrant the cost. Both are valid opinions. But that's why you need to figure this out for YOURSELF and don't rely on other people's opinions. If I had to guess, I'd guess that you don't feel it's necessary and that you're looking to be "convinced" to buy it. Right there is your answer - don't buy the warranty.

Dennis is right on... It's your decission. I recommend to my friends who are just getting into to boating to buy it because they are afraid of the complexity of their boats and it is a comfort. Once you are familiar with repairs, and you do the math, you may not believe it is worth the money. The insurance companys payout less than they take in, so the average person would not necessariliy benefit from the insurance...
