Hello,
I recently purchase a 98 250DA in Florida. It has no Air Conditioning, or genset but does have shore power hookup and a 20amp 12vdc output marine battery charger.
I am considering the Marvair 5000 btu 12 volt unit. This has the brushless DC motor-compressor. It pulls 30amps nominal at 12vdc according to the literature. I would like to run it while at anchor, overnight.

Anyone have experience with this brand or marine 12 volt DC air-conditioners in general? If it really performs, I would rather invest in a few deep cycle 100 AH batteries and not deal with installing a genset. Thanks in advance.

I would definitely use a battery isolator so the engine(s) would start in the morning
maybe a dedicated bank of batteries just for the unit.

Get a Honda EU200i portable generator and you will be happy with the Marvair. Just make sure you install a CO monitor or 2 inside your boat.

I'll assume since you are a reasonably new member you do not know that the use of portable generators onboard is the most hotly disputed topic discussed here. It might be best to delete the suggestion so as not to "start it". We just had a overlong discussion of it a few weeks ago and really don't need another one until winter. LOL

+1 Just like TV or the radio, if you don't like it TURN THE CHANNEL. If people want to use a portable genny on the boat thats their god given right whether it kills them or not.

Hey Steve, where do you boat in St. Pete?

Yes I've seen the portable gen discussions. I have small children so I'd prefer something in the bilge. Seems like the choice between alot of batteries or a generator.

Apparently some here do not know the difference between a recommendation and an order, a recommendation to a member that likely did not know this was a controversial issue here to keep others from promoting unsafe practices on the forum.

So you're the CRS Safety Officer now? You may want to let him know about how to properly pack a first aid kit too.

No, Just someone who cares about others and would never want to see them or their family suffer due to promotion of unsafe practices here.

Once again,,, welcome to the forum Steve.

Monocomike. I am new to cruising but not to engineering. I design stuff that rides on Delta and Atlas rockets. That is to say, i looked at your previous posts and your arguments are valid and you do not deserve such criticism..

Thanks for the support. The guys busting on me are good guys we just have a difference of opinion on that issue. One of the great things here is most folks really want to help other boaters.

Your original question is a tough one in that the options either cost a fortune or run into all kinds of physical limits. It was $11k for a previous owner to put the generator in my boat.

Welcome Aboard!

Yea it's all in good fun. That's the porblem with email/texts that they don't convey a sense of humor. I'm pretty laid back and laugh most stuff off. Life's too short to worry about the small stuff.
