So just as I cleared the Ballard locks my starboard engine just stopped? The oil pressure alarm sounded and when I looked at the tech RPM was zero.

It does turn over as normal but just does not fire.
Oil is at full, is golden and feels fine.

I had to turn around and go through the locks with just the Port engine. Just a little stresser for the start of the season.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Did you check the temp gauge? Maybe you sucked something up in the strainer and over heated?

When you are turning it over, check if it builds oil pressure on the gauge.

I was at 1,400 RPM still in no wake. temp about 180.

When trying to restart the oil pressure does not move at all.

Prior to it stopping: no smoke, no noise, it just stopped. It makes me think of starting at the electrical but I might check compression since that is pretty easy.

Did you try the master circuit breaker on the engine? Or it could be a loose connection on the wiring harness (usually a big round connector).

Thanks, I will give it a look this week. Hopefully it is something simple. It does turn over without any unusual sounds just does not fire.

Gas engines need two basic things to run, gas and spark. I am guessing you have carb engines and carbs
don't just quit, so I would be looking at the ignition system first then the fuel system second.

Just to cover all your bases, be sure your Halom system is working properly. My system leaked and neither engine would keep running. I used the override switch until I could replace the tank.

My port engine shut off while I was cruising along about a week ago. It shut down like I had turned off the key......... after further inspection it appears my tachometer shorted out.

I had no idea that was even possible.

All new gauges and new coils seem to have fixed that problem. :smt038

What's a halom system?

You wont suddenly lose compression driving around at no wake speeds. You'd have to lose compression in more than one cyl at the same time to literally stop running. I wouldnt waste my time checking compression for a minute. And its getting air. The flame arrestor isnt going to work one minute and suddenly clog to the point that it cant even putt around at 1400RPMs.

It is going to be fuel or spark. I think you lost the fuel pump or a pump relay. But you can verify this by spraying a little starting fluid in the air intake. If the engine fires, you know you do have a spark. That will confirm it isnt getting fuel and you can focus on that system. On the other hand, if it doesnt fire, you will know you have an ignition problem, and can focus on that system. On your engine there may be a square relay, actually 2 of them near the distributor. Those go out sometimes. My boat has 454s and we had an engine just shut down after a few minutes. Then we got it to start but it shut down again in a minute or two. We replaced/swapped a relay and thought it was fixed. It shut down again though about 20 minutes later. Turned out to be the fuel pump. After replacing it, all has been fine. The only problem is that these fuel pumps cost about 1000% more than car fuel pumps of course.
