The prior owner to our boat had improperlly installed a floor escutheon for a removable table that caused the cored balsa wood to rot and get soft when we walked on it.

In order to fix it I cut out the bottom layer of fiberglass out and remove the rotted wood, replaced it with 1/2" plywood, then rebuild with new fiberglass cloth and resin from the bottom. See attached photo.

The question is what is the grey paint the manufacturer uses in the engine compartment? Is it flame retardent paint?

Any advise on product would be helpful.

Thanks

Good work! I'm not sure about the paint used... good question. I will be watching for the answer also.

I think its gray gelcoat and I doubt is fireproof. I usually use Bilgecoat gray when I paint anything in the bilge, its a fairly good match to the factory color.

Is their a benefit of placing gel coat over the resin on the underside of the hatch?

Do you think i can just paint with a grey epoxy paint??

Hey techmitch...

My 2005 260 has an off white color in the bilge. It doesn't look like paint to me. It is smooth and even like gelcoat. Is that "white" bilgekote, or something else?

Not sure, but the bilgekote does come in white. A call to Sea Ray would probably answer that best. What i can tell you is that i did the wooden floor in my dinghy with it and it came out smooth as glass. Obviously surface preparation had a lot to do with it.

Sounds good, I will give it a good sanding and apply the bilgekote - thanks:smt038

When replacing our transom and engine compartment components I used a small amout of grey pigment mixed with the epoxy and brushed a final layer over the fiberglass. Only a very small amount is needed. It was a simple final step and gave a nice finish - here are a few pics of the completed project:

A nice clean difference.
