End of Season Event

Gary-
Not that you offered... but don't worry about a slip for me. I am admitedly a weather wimp, I'm not going to pound my way down the Bay if it's crappy (or predicted to be crappy on the way home). So given the time of year, I'd hate to reserve a slip that I have a decent chance of not needing. If you can get yourself and Skip slips, go for it! If we do come, I'm OK on the hook. And +1 (as they say) on the non-rafting with gas genny people. No offense gas guys, just too dangerous.

Are you and Skip bringing kids?

L&G,

We plan on anchoring out in Urbana for the Oyster fest and probably will be running a diesel gen set and are as well happy to raft up as long as were not rafted with a gas gen set. We also don't mind plugging someone in if need be.

We'd love to go to Annapolis or St. Michaels sometime in October so let is know and we will plan to be there.

John

How 'bout November 8th & 9th we take the boats down to Urbanna for the Ostyer festival? C'mon dude, it's only five hours!

If it was as good as the last 5 hours one we took, you got it... :smt038but I will work on it. That would be a pretty good raft up...

As far as kids... I think mine are too young for a raft up, my 2 year needs to move... Crazy boy... So I will ahve to talk to the wife, and see what we can do.

We will be doing St. Michael's sometime in October, it is a favorite of ours....

I have to comment on this generator talk... There is nothing wrong with rafting up with a properly maintained gas generator boat. Not only did I spend my first twenety years of life on a boat with a gas generator, I've been rafting up ever sense with freinds who have gas generators on their boats.

Everyone should/needs to invest in a good CO detector. My boat has them from the factory and they work very well. I typically raft up with 10+ boats overnight in which half are diesel, half are gas. In the past six years of rafting up 12+ times a year in that configuration we've never had a problem.

One year, actually this year, there was a 33ft late 90's Sea Ray who had generator problem. A mechanic replaced the fuel pump, and the new configuration was running way to rich. At raftup the CO detectors went off and the guy turned off his generator as he realized he had a problem. Nobody was hurt, simple problem simple solution.

I would hope everyone on this forum 1.) wouldn't discriminate to those who have gas generators (= less expensive boat; probably becuase they can't afford a monster like we have) and 2.) I seriously hope anyone on this forum would be polite enough to turn off their generator if it posed a problem. If someone was not that polite, I'd simply untie my boat and re-anchor.

So I'll happily extended a courtesy of rafting up w/ the smaller Sea Rays if needed!

My oldest has a soccer game Saturday 8 Nov at 0915. My wife and I are still negotiating the plan about her driving down after the soccer game and me running the boat by myself to Urbanna on Thursday or Friday to have Gary try to outdo my "Obama 08" practical joke.
Negotiations continue. If I come in 2d place in the negotiation, my backup plan is to drive down and haul the kids and wife aboard Gary's boat. We will take the guest stateroom and prefer our coffee at 8:30.
Gary, you are the man.

I see that several people posted October is a good month... this is my thought...

October 4ht & 5th or 18th/19th. Because the Annapolis Power Boat show is the weekend of the 18th, October 4th & 5th seems to make better sense for a Sea Ray get together.

Is anyone interested in going to St. Michaels for the weekend of the 4th & 5th? I there is interest can call and talk to Mike tomorrow (shoot I'll be there Saturday), and see if they have several slips available for our group.

Then, for they guys down south we can have a meet in Urbana - I am not familar with this area but I'll pull a chart in the morning.

So who would be up for St. Michaels on October 4th/5th and who is up for Urbana in November?

St. Michaels October 4th/5th:

1. SEA Ya!
2.
3.
4.

Urbana in November 8th/9th:

1. SEA Ya! (50% sure on this event)
2.
3.
4.

Doesn't the second paragraph contradict the first? What if you were in town and you had left a 13 year old and 9 year old on the boat when the "problem" occurred?

Seems like Space Shuttle math to me... Before the first Space Shuttle launch they had statistics they would lose 1 Shuttle every 100 launches (and they did)... 99% isn't bad quality of service I guess. That 1% is a real bitch though.

Not discriminating.. The aerodynamics and fresh air intake locations in a raft up just add too much risk for my comfort level.. And.. I'll give them FREE power!

Mike-
For Urbanna, we're a definite maybe. I'll check with the crew on St. Michaels for 10/4 & 5. As far as the gas generator thing goes, it is not snobby, it's just a safety issue. I'm not going to bet the life of my 8 and 10 year old on CO detectors (which of course I have)! Plus they tend to stink--- gas generators that is, not my kids.

OK, the kids stink sometime too, but that's neither here nor there.

I do raft with gas boats all the time, they either don't have generators or they don't run them all night, or for long periods during the day. That's why I carry a 15A - 30A AC adaptor and plug them in to the outlet in the cockpit locker.

A agree with the side of caution on generators. We are gas but we do not run the generator all night. In fact we only run it when necessary to top off the the batteries (thank you Sea Ray for no seperate house bank-what were they thinking?) and to cook. We raft up all the time with like minded boaters who are safety oriented and courtious to their rafting neighbors.

St. Michael's is sounding good-count us as a definate maybe.

I also have a 30A to Plug in Power cord and extension cords to share

It looks like there is strong interest in St. Michael's October 4th/5th! I'll give them a call this afternoon to see if they'll be able to accomidate a small group that weekend.

jrirvine1 - do you have any add'l information on the small craft festival that weekend?

Unfortunately I can not help with the slip. We tried to get one last year and missed out but got the form in at the first minute this year and ended up with a slip. We will be in slip 12 at the town dock so stop by. We keep the boat down the river in Deltaville. There are 3 or 4 boats from our marina going up together. Hope to see you there.

We had a slip reservation, not sure if the Mrs canceled it as we decided to not bring the boat...I will find out if it's still available.

I think I will start a new post.Way to many boats and small area for the Urbana Oyster fest.Cant get out if you want to leave early.

You doing both trips? My neighbor John has told me some stories about you.... :smt001

26th Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival
October 4, 10am – 5pm
One of the nation’s premier small craft events! Hundreds of amateur and professional boat builders and enthusiasts come from all over the region to display their skiffs, kayaks, and canoes. Take part in demonstrations and workshops, or simply chat with the owners and watch these one-of-a-kind vessels race. Included with Museum admission.

We may have out of town guests with us and may only be able to come for the day.

The Mrs already canceled our slip reservation here:

I worked at this marina as a young lad pumping gas and doing general crap work.

BTW, owner/dock master is as grouchy and grumpy as they come. My father-in-law stayed there 2 years ago for the Oyster Festival and though the service was good, it was definitely not with a smile.

BTW, can Urbanna still called it an Oyster Festival if the Oysters are shipped in? They use to be local when I lived there as a kid.

St. Micheal's October 4th/5th:

Spoke to Mike at St. Michael's Marina, he said he'd be pleased to accomidate our group on those days!

On Monday I'll make another post and see who wants to go, then I'll let Mike know what spaces we tenatively need (because another group I'm in has a great repor with them, he commendted that he'd pull some strings to try to get us docked together )
