Eisenglass Cleaning or Replacement?

Clarification: Strataglass rolls up just fine. If you have long spans of Strataglass (or any other plastic glass for that matter), it will get distortions in it from the sun unless you support it extrememly well along the entire span (not likely). Strataglass is sensitive to certain chemicals. We have a couple of dull spots on ours. It has very good optics. It lasts a lot longer than Eisenglass, but otherwise, behaves very similarly. It looks much better than eisenglass.

If you have Makrolon (polycarbonate, hard, plastic windows), it does absolutely not roll up. It has incredible optics. It is not sensitive to chemicals (sunscreen) like Strataglass, but they have had some manufacturing defects where it crazes in the first year or so. I had one panel go bad out of 5. I had it re-done. After over 2 years, they all look brand new.

If you build boats, use eisenglass. If you are selling a boat, use eisenglass. If you own a boat, use Makrolon anywhere that you don't need to roll windows up. Use Strataglass everywhere else.

I was thinking that I would actually use Makrolon for the main frame of windows with U-zip sections. The outer part would be Makrolon and would stay in place and be easy to see through and look great. The inner part would be Strataglass and would look very good, last a long time, and roll up. The eisenglass would line the trash cans.

Thanks for clarification John. The thought of combining both materials sounds like a great idea. Since I just replaced my pannels last season I'll see how they hold up. I usually get 3-4 yrs out of them. What's the price on Strataglass and Makrolon, so I can get an idea? Just for references, I paid about $550 to GL for new 5 pannels and another $480 for u-zippers. So, the final product (all 5 pannels with u-zippers) cost me about $1K. This is of course all usual eisinglass.

Eisenglass has its purpose. I choose not to use it, currently. It sure is a good bit cheaper to buy.

go to boatswain locker
give them your hull number and they can ship you the factory replacement very reasonable

Has anyone used Flitz on their eisenglass, and results if any.

Rich

I just tried using Flitz today to clean up my eisenglass. I was not happy with the results. The Flitz left a slight haze on the Eisenglass. So, I would not recommend the Flitz.

I bought another product on E-Bay, and it was fairly easy to use and had nice results. I used this product to remove the hazing left by the Flitz. The link is below.
