DTS Shift issues - Can't reverse Starboard Engine

There is a neutral switch that tells the computer when the shifter is moved out of neutral. It’s a 2 wire switch with the little white button that pops out when you shift to forward or reverse.

Usually when that goes bad, you can still shift into gear but rpm will be limited to 1200 and there will be a constant beeping.

Great feedback, this is NOT my case at all. I can switch to Forward with no issues and then to neutral with no issues. intermittently, every other time I switch to reverse, I get the shift error. The puzzling part is sometimes it does shift into reverse, and I still get the error, and sometimes it does not shift into reverse, and I get the error.

I was able to cruise at various RPMs (3500 & 3700) with no issues.

I'm looking to schedule a mechanic and truck to haul the boat out next week.
Good luck with it. Similar to my situation, except I never got any error messages. The engine would rev up but it wouldn’t “catch”. I would then have to push it harder and it would bang into gear. Not a lot of fun while docking. Replaced the clutch and all good now.

FWIW, I picked up the switch yesterday to install, as getting on the boat I tripped and filled in the water!!!! The switch was in a bag and the bag floated, the phone was still in my pocket, but I lost my glasses. So, I ended up Not doing anything as the bag that housed the switch had a couple of holes and some water got into the bag.

I understand that it’s not your issue but I saw you posted that the mechanic was going to change a switch ($50). This is in line with the cost of the neutral switch. It was more of a heads up that I didn’t think it would resolve your issue.

hope you get it resolved soon.

Yikes! I hope nothing was hurt but your pride!

Before paying anything, i was going to switch the switches and see the problem follows (doubt it). I'm trying to coordinate mechanic and haul out schedule in the meantime, I'm suspecting a cable issue. It's not suspecting clutch because I'm not facing the symptoms stated in one of the posts above.

hahaha! absolutely, nothing like 4 teenagers trying not to laugh so that they can spend the day in the water!!!!

Quick update, I switched the switches between the port and starboard engine, I went our last night, and did not have a single issue or error on the screen. I'm still scheduled to go out on Saturday, but after 1 day test, looking good (knock on wood). My challenge is the logistics of the mechanic availability and ability to haul the boat out.

I moved the lever on both starboard and port multiple times. On the port side, it was much easier than on the starboard side. Starboard required more effort.

A couple of things I learned through the process. The switches sit on a square space filler, for the lack of better name. When I initially switched them, i did not see the spacer and it fill. When I started the engines, neither would start and i got an error on both engines for gear error. Luckily, the spacers were found quickly and installed. Then I had no more issues. My conclusion or assumption is that if there is an issue with switched, looking or reseating the switch may not be a bad idea here.

I don't consider this issue closed yet and I will keep providing updates.

Another update, after 4 or 5 outings, I still have no shift errors on either of the engines! Keeping my fingers crossed!

Great news. Did you ever have the mechanic look at it or you just switched the switches?
