...and I'm not usually superstitious, but because so many things go wrong with boats anyway, I don't want to wonder when they do.

I'm not fond of the name of our new-to-us 340, never have been fond of naming boats anyway. If I remove the name and don't rename it...is it the same as renaming without the ceremony etc?

The name on the last used boat I bought was 'princess.'

I peeled it off before I took it home from the dealer, only ceremony was a sigh of relief my friends never seen it ;)

Do the whole ceremony just to be on the safe side. If anything goes wrong, you'll always wonder.

Do the denaming ceremony and you're good to go. When you decide on a new name, then do the naming ceremony.

I think I told this once before on CSR, but here it is again...

An interesting thing happened to us when we changed our current boat's name. We did the denaming and naming ceremony all in the same day. It was a beautiful, sunny day with light winds and we did it right at the dock, even though the boat would eventually go back out to the mooring. In attendance was my wife, our two kids, my parents and grandmother. The ceremonies, themselves, went off without a hitch as we happily shared the bubbly refreshments with Neptune.

All was well and I motored the boat out to the mooring with the skiff in tow. I tied the newly named Lazy Daze up to the mooring, jumped in the skiff and rowed the 300' back to the dock. I tied the skiff up and started up the ramp to the house when all of a sudden the skies got dark, the wind started howling and what was once a calm, reflective sea turned into a dark mass of mean looking white caps.

At once, I realized that I did the naming ceremony wrong! I did it from the stern when it should of been done from the bow! I wasn't sure what to do as we were out of the bubbly stuff. My only chance was to hope that another form of alcohol would do. I rowed back out, cautiously hopped back on the rocking, and incorrectly named, Lazy Daze and climbed up to the bow. I braced one leg against each side of the rail at the bow and performed the naming ceremony again.

Hoping I did it correctly, I made my way back into the skiff and back to the dock. As I finished tying the skiff to the dock, I stood up and looked out across the sea to our boat. Within the next 60 seconds the skies lightened, the seas calmed and Lazy Daze sat still and happy... even brightly gleaming as the sun broke through the clouds. Lucky for us, Neptune is a Miller Lite fan.

Are you sure you weren't being chased by Egyptians and God was just parting the seas?

I just renamed our boat, did all the ceremonies and had quite a party. Pretty much the hit of the season at our marina.

If your boat is a documented vessel it must have a name and hailing port. If you only have it registered with your state you can go nameless. Or you could do what someone here in the Delta did; their boat name?..... "Nothing Clever"

We did it.... If it really works it was well worth the fun. If it didn't work.....it was still worth the fun and the fish, crabs, and slip mates all got a good drink on

my dock mate just had a horrible experience. He decided the cermonies were non-sense. he peeled the old name off, drove across the bay for lunch and gave the new name to the dock master for registration. Then came the fury. on the way back the hose running to the sea pump mysteriously got pinched and he overheated. alarm magically never went off. engine quit he lifted the hatch to find 2' of water in the bilge (melted the bellow) and the pump floating on top because some how the pump came unglued from the bottom. wound up getting towed back while having to hold his his bilge pump submerged to keep him afloat. he got back to the dock to quickly plug in to save his battery from draining with the pump continuously running all to find that he had left his shore power cord at the restaraunt. luckily he got pulled out by the hoist before his battery quit and he sank....to this day we still have no idea how the hose got pinched, how come his bilge pump wasn't epoxied down and testing his alarms they all seem to work fine. needless to say he is a huge proponent of the cermonies now!

Neptune is one powerful dude and he ain't to be messed with. My first 330 was named Blue Heron when I bought it. A few weeks later I renamed her and instead of following the required procedures, I drank most of the champagne. Here's the result.....

It' ain't nice to fool around with ol' Neptune.

Great story! MM

Love it Dennis! Fabulous story.

Thanks! I swear, if I wasn't there to experience it first hand, I'd never believe it happened. Even now, reading through what I wrote, it looks like a bunch of baloney. But it really did happen just as I wrote. Very weird, for sure!

Mike, that must be the result of what you were telling my wife and I about huh?

I have used the same name on all three of my cruising boats. Not 1, 11, or 111. Just the same name. The only ceremony was to call the guy who puts names on boats and told him to remove the old name and put our name on. Neptune, if You are reading this please know we love, respect and fear You. Please grant us fair winds, calm seas and no mechanical failure. Maybe I should have bought some Champagne and made a toast. Hopefully tonight will not be too late.

Yes it is Mike. You were awful lucky on that one.

Well I'm convinced. As was pointed out, my boat is registered with the Coast Guard and will remin named as is for now. But, when the time comes the proper denaming and renaming ceremonies will be performed.

AMFM I had read your blog, that's what prompted me to ask. Turtlesboat I'm sure you'e right, if I don't do it properly...I'll always wonder.

Thanks to everyone who posted.
