Do you lock your cabin door?

As a habit i lock the door. ( i also leave the ignition keys in )

Last year I was D/w/I ( dinking while intoxicated.) Went for dinner dinked back to the boat. Threw the keys to the wife ... Terrible throw .... actually went right over her head.. I had a floatie and a key inflatable thing..... Still sank like a rock.

Spare key came in handy...

I wonder how the ins company would feel when they examine the police report after a claim for stolen whatever and it reads, "no sign of forced entry."

I'm just sayin'

Didn't know Reisterstown was that rough! Try growing up in Brooklyn (and I don't mean by the Harbor Tunnel).

I have thought of this too. I figure the damage they inflict while trying to get in is going to suck. BUT once they are in they are going to be damaging/stealing things that are WAY more valuable than the door lock. I guess locking it would keep the casual thief/snooper away. Once a pro is onboard he isn't gonna let some cheap lock keep him out.

I never lock it, the expense of repair or forgetting the keys is why. Lets face it despite the lock with a screw driver i would be able to open any door in 5 seconds flat. Usually just a hard pull without any tools will do the trick. I think your just foolinf yourself by locking the door, but what do I know I carry a gun all the time.

Door is kept locked (easier to justify "forced entry" to insurance company). But as others have said it will just keep the 'honest" people out! Keep a spare key in one of those simplex lock (push button) key boxes that you see on homes for sale (you can find them at home depot/menards/lowes for $20). If I (or a neighbor/friend) need a key (cabin door & dock box) they can access it. We know the code - friends/neighbors can call us for the code if needed to borrow something. Plus I added a cheap safe in the front berth that keeps wallets,cc,$, keys, wife's jewelry safe from walking away while rafted, at the beach, etc...

I lock mine. Where do you guys keep your hidden keys?

I'll never tell

I went for the simple, in plain site, method. I keep a small tool bag, a soft canvas bag with basic tools in the storage area under the captains seat. The key, on a float, is in that bag.

Again, not fool proof but enough to be hidden from roaming teens or a casual looker. A pro does not even need keys.
Also, easy to describe if I ever need a key for a service tech or dock mate.

Well I am a pro. I've been a locksmith for 23 years. I was joking when I asked where you keep yours, you're not suppose to say.
Anyway. These locks are not the hardest to get into by far, but they will keep the quick snatch and grab thefts down.

Also, everyone that has the floating foam or plastic key float. Test them out. Also don't test them out at the docks edge, test them in a bowl or sink. Testing them in 20' of water and having them sink on you will really feel stupid if they sink before your eyes.

I tested the float in a sink. I mention the float because without the float it would be hard to find loose in a bag of tools.

As to full disclosure, I have very little concern about issues or theft on my boat. (famous last words I know). I am in a private marina attached to a private addition. Guard gate to get in the addition, locked gate to access the slips and a patrolling security. I am in a secluded cove that has 300 yards of no wake to get to the slips. My boat is 80 miles from any large city. As someone else said, I lock it because it let's me sleep better.

I was just slow today and did a few posts.

My friend's wife came down one weekend and forgot the keys. There was no stashed spare key. I have no priors and no experience in lock picking, but I got the door to his Maxum open with the bottle opener attached to a crappy swiss army knife keychain thing.

Heck... My boat is 20 feet in the air when I am not around, and I STILL lock it...
I lol'd

In your grandmother's purse  Seriously, nope, won't tell anyone.. Not even my dog.

I locked my door.. For insurance purpose and if I see damaged door, at least I know someone broke in. I even made custom lock on my hatch. Don't want anyone opening my hatch and take parts off my motor. I have a great motor, Mercruiser and it's very common for boaters to own Mercruiser so if they need parts, it so easy to board other people's boat and take what you need... It's worth the work to make custom lock for my peace of mind.

What if you bump your head and forget your name???

I only lock mine when I'm inside sleeping. Other than that we are at a private dock.

Get enough searay owners together and I bet someones key will work in anothers boat. They arent that many combo of keys.

OK..... So your at your slip and your doing your.... "leaving the boat prep" Wash down the boat, check the shore power and make sure it's plugged in, all covers secure, hatches shut, all lines secured, AC/DC swiches in the right posistion, Make sure the stuff that you need at home are off the boat, turn off the battery switches, canvas is all secured, then you jump off the boat to make sure you already did your depart checklist by re-washing what you already washed, checking the things you already checked, and securing what you already secured, and you don't take the 2 seconds to turn a key to lock the cabin for peace of mind??? I just don't get it. Brian

My key works in 6-7 SeaRay's I have tried so far, only 1 so far that the key wouldn't open. Some of theirs work in mine and some don't. Not very secure I realize, but like I said on page 1, keeps the honest people out.

Tom, You guys in FL like to check out other SR locks? :smt043

Its probably safe to say that anyone who might want to steal something from your boat most likely doesn't already own their own Sea Ray...

Does Bayliner use the same locks? Now THOSE guys you need to watch out for...

House, cars, boats...doesn't matter. Insured...never locked. My experience has been that locks have been more of an impediment to me that to anyone who really wanted to take something.
