We're thinking of taking a cruise from Cape May to Delaware for a late lunch on Sunday. Does anyone have any recommendations? Any concerns we need to be aware of?
Thanks!

If you go up the Delaware River, becareful if the tide is against the wind, it could be very rough. If you have all day, I would go to the Chesapeake house on the C&D cannel in Chesapeake City, MD...

While I really enjoy Chesapeake City, I would caution against heading there for a late Sunday Lunch. It will be approaching 140 miles round trip from your starting point I believe. I purchased my boat from Gus at Ottens Harbor which is pretty close to you I think. I then brought it back to Havre De Grace Md, up through the Delaware Bay and then through the C&D canal.

Plus as mentioned, beware of opposing wind and tides in the the Delaware Bay. It's like one big funnel point everything North.

Sorry I can't help with other dining suggestions.

Rod is correct in that the conditions can get ugly on the Delaware. The restaurant is actually called The Chesapeake Inn. Here is a link http://www.martuscelliandsons.com/ci/index.php?p=marina . Hit the dock master (Andy) on Ch.16 for slip assignment. It's a pretty good trip from Cape May for just a "late lunch" and it's also a nice little town to explorer http://chesapeakecity.com/ so you may want to consider spending the night.

PS If/when you do make the trip let me know, maybe the admiral and I can meet you guys for a beer as the Chesapeake Inn is only 20 Min's from our home.

If your not looking to go so far then you could just check out Lewis DE. Lewis is a nice town with many good restaurants. Sorry I can't give you a specific reccomendation on dining but I can say I've had several nice meals there through the years. I concur on the choppyness of the DE bay, it can turn nasty and make for an uncomfortable trip, even with a larger vessel. Maybe a local will chime in with some specifics. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

I agree with techmitch. Chesapeake City is worth the trip but I would try to make a weekend of it if possible. That way you can enjoy the town while you are there.

Karen, my wife and I go to Lewis about every six months or so. There are many great restaurants in the canal most have slips for boaters. I will call my uncle after work and get the names. I'll post them for you tonight.

The problem with going ot Lewis, DE is from Cape May you cross a wide part of the lower bay and it could be very rough fro a small boat. Going north, up the river, as the Delaware narrows the ride improves. The C&D is a great experiance, and is the gateway to the beautiful Chesapeake. I would plan at least a week end to go that way...

Chesapeake Inn is on my to-do list, but not this time. Looks like an awesome place!

We've been in the Delaware Bay every weekend (granted, it's only 2-4 miles out lol) since the end of May and chop is one of my concerns. We will only head out if the radar is clear and the bay is calm. I do know that weather can change in seconds. I was thinking we could follow the route of the ferry since we were thinking of heading into the Lewes area.

CaptainB...Gus' is at the end of the harbor. We are between Gus' and the Sightseer at the other end of the Harbor.

Fishermens Wharf, was nice. It sits down near the bridge and behind the sightseeing boats.
Butters is very nice, pricey, but very good food. Just kinda walk up the hill and down the main drag. As soon as we get a handle on things around here I think we may try to do the same trip. Coming up the bay and across to Del. Then dock in Lewis.

Hmmm...maybe I should plan this for next weekend instead of this and do a bit more research. The fastest way for me to get to DE is through that wide part of the bay.....sometimes fastest isn't the best, huh?

Karen, go to Irish Eyes, they have better food than the Warf. They don't have alot of slips but there is a public dock across the canal from them, only a short walk. Watch the current in the canal, especially on the ebb it can run pretty hard. Pick a nice day and you are only about an hour run from Cape May Canal west end to Roosevelt Inlet. Follow a ferry if you want 'contact comfort'. There are some nice places to eat in town Lewes as well. Striper Bites, The Buttery, Jakes Seafood and Cafe Azafran. All these places are only a block or two up from the public dock at the drawbridge.
When you coming over to my neck of the woods? You will pass my boat on your way into town, I'm in Pilottown Marina on the right headed into town. I'm the 300 with the black camper top stern in by the marina office. If you see me working on the boat, blow the horn and wave on the way past.

I've seen that boat! It's in a few of my daughters pictures (background) and it's one of the reasons I started looking at the late 80's 300. Small world! My uncle works with the crew of the Overfalls Lightship. Chuck does the photos and layouts for the boat. You have a beautiful Sea Ray, as seen from the tour boats!

Karen I doubled checked the distance and it is only about 20 miles form the end of the canal to Lewis... You should be able to make. Saturday afternoon there will probably be thunderstorms and rough water... Sunday looks better...

dwna1a, who is your uncle? Chuck? Chuck Shelton by any chance? I have a friend who is on the work gang at the Overfalls. Thanks for the compliments on my boat. I often wonder how many vacation pics and vids we end up in as I see lots of people snapping away as they go past on the party boats.

Thanks for the tips!!! We were going to try and come this Sunday, but the weather right now is a bit iffy...if not this Sunday, maybe next. How is the water in the canal? Always deep or do I have to watch the tides?

You will have good water depth all the way from the inlet to downtown, even at low tide. At low tide, keep more to the middle. I usually see about 12' in the center at low water. When you come into Rosevelt Inlet, keep the red bouy on your right, its shoaled up towards the northwest side of the inlet, plenty of water mid channel. There is a lighted range visable thats good to use to stay mid channel but in boats our size, its not that important as long as you follow Red Right Returning and pass that red nun on your starboard side.

dwna1a, ask your uncle if he knows Bert Long, thats my friend at the Overfalls. If you get up my way stop in and say hello, we can swap stories about old Sea Rays.
