Diesel shortage looming

To add insult to injury, the emissions requirements of modern diesels kill the fuel economy. I’m glad I have a gasoline engine. I don’t drive long distances and tow heavy enough to justify the diesel. I do love the 48 gallon fuel tank I have in my truck.

That is not what I have personally seen with my families trucks. A 2020 Ram 350 gets 25+ mpg on the highway and recently got 14 mpg towing a loaded 24 foot box trailer at 80 mph…

Damn. My 2016 F250 Diesel gets about 14mpg avg combined city and hwy when not towing. And, yes I am heavy on the throttle and heavy on the brakes.

Its unfortunate that we are tied to the global supply. Some are asking why, we have our own supply. Its because we are also exporters of oil as a country. It's complicated to understand but equally complicated to explain.
  • The top five crude oil producers and their percentage shares of world crude oil production in 2021 were:
  • United States 14.5%
  • Russia 13.1%
  • Saudi Arabia 12.1%
  • Canada 5.8%
  • Iraq 5.3%

I get about 21mpg or so on the highway with my 2011 dirtymax. But it has had the same emissions equipment as a 7.3 powerstroke since 2012. :) Not bad on an almost 8,000lb 4x4 with a 6” lift and 36” tires

While a modern diesel will still have better mileage that an equivalent gas engine the fuel economy of modern Diesel engines would be better without all of the emissions systems. Here is an article that discusses this.

My son has a 2021 2500 Ram Cummins 4x4 that he tows his 8000lb TT with. He averages about 16 MPG empty and 12 MPG towing on the highway. He had a 2018 2500 Ram 6.4 Hemi with 4.10's before that and averaged 8.5 MPG towing the same TT. I have a truck identical to his 2018 and average about 9.5 towing our 9000lb boat and average 12MPG total after 20,000 miles. All hand calculated.

Well...my son towed his camper for work. He lived in it for almost 3 years and about every 3 months had to tow it usually at least several hundred miles (Pittsburgh>Baytown, TX, Pittsburgh > Dickinson, ND, Baytown, TX > Thief River Falls, MN, etc). He was given a limited time to get there before starting to dock his pay. 600 miles/day was the limit. Since all reports I have seen show the Chevy, F150, and Rivian are limited to about 90 miles towing that much weight means the trip to Baytown would have taken about 12-15 recharges along the way, each about 60 minutes. Yeah...I'm sure exceptions and policies would have to be changed but instead of 2 days that trip would have taken about 4 days.
It will be a long time before trucks are ready for this EV stuff

Theres good videos on YouTube on an F150 EV falling dot trying to tow compared to its gas twin.
EV’s are the windmills of the auto industry.
You can’t long haul or tow, ship, air freight etc in an EV.

Yeah I watched a few of those videos. With a 90 mile range you would probably want to stop to recharge every 60 miles or so, just like you don't run your ICE down to E when on a long trip

Have you guys seen the ad's for the EV GMC Sierra Denalli? They say it'll have 400 mile range. No idea how it would tow, probably a lot like the Ford.

Lots of batteries!

The dealer won't give me any pricing info but based on this, the work truck with nothing on it will start at 40, meaning $$$ to get the big range.

WT estimated MSRP starts at $39,900+DFC* with optional features and content, including up to 20,000 lbs. towing capability.* Future variations will offer a range of MSRPs, from around $50,000 to $60,000, $70,000, $80,000 and more, depending on selected battery range and available features such as Multi-Flex Midgate® with pass-through, panoramic fixed-glass roof, 4-Wheel Steer and Wide Open Watts Mode – providing a wide variety of capability and pricing options.

Speaking of Detroit's corruption, how's Kwame Kilpatrick these days?
He only served 7yrs of his 28yr sentence.
He is Atlanta’s problem now but came back to Detroit a year or so ago to preach on giving second chances and not to forget those in prison. He is just another example of Detroits ability to shit out terd politicians.
Thanks for the reminder
