Thanks everyone for the input!

A couple of comments.

1) I am not being a "Hard *ss" about anything. They offered the $100 to me as a "good will" gesture. I did not suggest to them that I needed to be paid for my time and efforts driving up.

2) I have never had anyone cancel on a large dollar purchase before and I was not sure how to handle the situation so I posted this for some guidance. I had no specific plans to keep the money. I appreciate all the input that I have received on this.

3) I have not deposited the down payment yet anyway. No issues with the bank and clearance etc.

So with all that being said, here is my plan. On Friday I will contact them as we discussed to see which direction we are going. If it is going my way, we will proceed and close the deal on Saturday. If it is not going to go through, I will refund (Tear up, mail it to them etc) the down payment check in whatever manner they request. As for the $100 compensation - I will not ask for it and will accept it only if they are insistent on paying for it. Then I will tithe it on Sunday at my church.

Steve you are a good guy... you give me hope with humanity... High road is best... :smt038

I'm with Frank on this one. Sell the wife/mother on the deal. If its still a no-go give them the check and walk (provided you didn't spend $250 in gas traveling to make the deal).

Good plan and you are a good man.

I really don't see this as a "she wears the pants in the family" situation. A good relationship is based on making decisions together. I would not make any decision if my wife wasn't by my side in agreement. I see both sides of this, and if you're traveling on hour one way to show the trailer, then take the $100 for your time, gas and trouble.

Update:

Two weeks ago when I called the son back on Friday... and on Saturday ... he didn't pick up his cell phone and I left messages both times..... and got no responses. All I asked was an update on if we were going to close the sale or not and if not what I should do with the check. Nope, nada, zip, no answer.... Didn't even have the courtesy to call me back.

I have the check taped to my dartboard....

Oh Well...

I think the anwer is in his silence. Oh well, you are the better man. Burn the check and move on!

So here is the final outcome of the story.

I was selling the park model trailer only. Had a guy that made an offer a little lower than I wanted but I figured what the hell, I should take it because the lot rental / boat slip payment was due in a week ($4,500 balance) and that was a lot more than the amount I would miss if I accepted the low offer. We settled on a deal for the trailer and they immediately paid the campground management their fee (10% commission) so I knew they were for real. :wow:

They did not have boat but wanted to look for a open bow boat and originally they were not interested in my Monaco cuddy cabin. They did inquire about my boat and I gave them a high price thinking that they wouldn't accept it.

As the deal progressed they then inquired again about my boat - they went and looked at it and accepted my price as is.

Bottom line, i got a fair deal overall and I am now boatless and trailerless but now I get to shop around for my new Dancer... Let the fun begin...:smt038
