Thanks everyone who has given me much needed advice over the last few weeks as we've been contemplating, and then executing, the move to the new boat - 2005 420 DB.

We took delivery yesterday, and I moved it up to Annapolis today in cool but basically pleasant weather. Despite an initial loss of all gauges (corrected by cycling all DC power), the ride was uneventful. Given the large number of people who seem interested in the DA to DB conversion, I thought I'd offer a few observations.

1. Ambient Noise - Being able to hear appears to be an improvement, although my screaming 2 year old WAS NOT on the boat so I can't state that conclusively. However, running noise is so much less - it's fantastic.

2. Ride - much bigger boat, enough said. My 6 year old spent the whole trip watching movies and not getting seasick (I seem to recall hearing that this would happen from Festivus).

3. The aft canvas dramatically reduces concern about kids transiting to the bridge. It essentially makes the stairs an interior option. Not too applicable during the hot summer however. Handheld radios also made communicating easy (DAD, I NEED A SNACK!!!).

4. I now understand why there is so little written about the Sea Ray Navigator. It has great functionality, but that doesn't help if it is in a continuous reboot cycle. The Raymarine C120 was solid the whole time.

5. Love the diesels (didn't check fuel prices entering back creek however, on purpose). Ran solid at the same pitch the whole time with no concerning little noises or hiccups that add stress. Basically had 25Kts, 32 GPH, 2400 RPM.

6. Docking - the visibility is different but it was not more stressful than our 320. The large props/Diesels make it stop/start whenever you shift. Very responsive. 2 days without using the bow-thruster!

Question for the experts - we only saw 2700 RPM at WOT with the 480 CEs. I will be asking the PWM expert about this on Tuesday, but I thought the RPM was supposed to be 2800? 85% is not quite 2300 which is a bit slow.

Also - is there a preferred method of accessing the the masts etc - my mast head light has rotated sideways and needs to be tightened up.

Definitely looking forward to BIH, should be a great time.

Great Weekend!

Great boat, Ed. Congrats.

Did your engines turn 2800+ during the sea trial? Did you get a mechanical survey?

The Cummins engines are very reliable, but no diesel will tolerate being overloaded for long. Your engines should turn 2800+ (read 2850 / 2900) with your boat FULLY loaded with fuel, gear, water, people, and all the 'stuff' that accumulates. If your engines are performing to spec, you will need to re-pitch props to achieve the proper RPM. Things to check before re-pitching would be your boost pressure. It is possible that if your turbos or heat exchangers are compromised/clogged, you are not realizing full boost. Next, you will want to change all fuel filters, both Racor and on engine.

Good luck.

Matt,
Thanks for the ideas. All filters (fuel, air) were changed prior to delivery, props were reconditioned. It was noted during the survey that the rpms were a little low, it was believed that the new filters and prop adjustments would resolve. However, apparently not. I will be bringing this back up with the dealer on Tuesday.

Thanks,

Total Eclipse - Look forward to meeting and finding out how the boat is working for you. We have 2 kids (2, 6) so boating is an adventure.
Everyone will also suggest you add your boat info to your signature line, and location under the User CP.

See you on the water.
Take care.

The decrease in sound on the bridge is very nice... to be fair, however, the cabin tends to be a little noisy with the engines right under the floor...

Hey Frank! You can join the bridge boat club if you mount one of these suckers on your Sundancer:

Robski67,
Is our side the diesel guys or the Dancer guys? Diesel guys seem to tend to get some of the board members a bit edgy...I don't understand it!!!

Congrats! Good to see so many people around the Annapolis area. We are in Edgewater MD and took our recently purchased Sea Ray to Broad Creek over the weekend and motored back to the South River Sunday... cool but sunny weather

In my expereince the DB style boat makes bad weather or off season boating more enjoyable so I'm sure you'll end up really enjoying the layout.

My Sea Ray has the pre-Navigator Northstar GPS and it too always gets stuck in the forever reboot mode...pos. I hear a software update may help this but not sure, let me know if you figure out why its doing this on yours though.

We'll all have to post local Severn River and South River fuel price this season to see where the best deals are!

Congratulations Ed....

Just try to keep an eye out for little old me running around in your area... I know us little 260 DAs can be a bit hard to see... look between the bow rail and the deck... I'm down there somewhere...

That is priceless - the view is definately different! I will try and remember my roots, behave myself in the Gas/Diesel wars, and have a great time in the process. Thanks again everyone.
