Good morning everyone!

I had my marina load test my batteries last week as I couldn't start my starboard engine without using the emergency crossover.

Turned out three of the five were shot so they recommended replacing all five since they are the originals (fourth season and going on five years since installed when the boat was built). I agreed. The manager at my marina said I had 'cheapy' Interstates and he would be using Deka.

I did a little research which confirmed that Deka is a solid, high end brand, that's been around quite a while. That said, I just received the bill.

Does anyone out there think that $212 each is high? These are group 27 batteries. They installed four dual purpose 27s for the engines and a deep cycle 27 for the house. Everywhere I look this size battery can be had ranging from $95 to say $120 a piece.

I plan on calling Deka Monday morning to get pricing as if I were buying them myself but figured I'd throw this out there from the group.

Thanks!!

Are they AGM batteries or wet cell batteries? I have Deka AGM (8D size x 4) and they were pricey but I've gotten 5 years on them and they are still going strong even though the house batteries have been drained completely out a few times. Love 'em... and they love me back.

They are of the Marine Master series which are flooded.

Yup....I'm figuring that out. Does anyone know where I might be able to get local pricing on Deka besides having to wait until Monday to call East Penn Manufacturing directly?

Price shopping after the fact always leads to disappointment.

Was that 212 each including labor/disposal or did they add labor on top? At a marina/dealer I would expect to pay that, I assume you didnt ask how much before giving the the OK?

Just bought them from a distributer in West Babylon

That would be East Penn.....they seem to be the only place within about 100 miles! Can I ask you which one's you bought and what you paid for them?

$211.95 each plus one hour labor to install the five of them. I didn't ask figuring at the very least my marina would be competitive. Additionally, the invoice is wrong. It shows five 27M6 starting batteries. They installed four DP27s and one DC27.

You would think if they charged that much they would have at least thrown the labor in. They dont buy high volume most likely and they probably paid the same (or maybe more) as you can buy them for, they have to pay the bills.

Hindsight is 20/20 but the last place I would buy a battery from is a boat dealer or marina unless it was an emergency, talk to the manager and try get the bill lowered a little once you get the prices for the exact batteries you bought if there is a huge difference. I'm all for making money but no need to retire off of selling five batteries..

Mine are the extremely large 8D batteries so a different animal for cranking a large diesel....I paid around $260 each.

I bought group 27's from east penn last season. One dual purpose and one deep cycle. I used a friends acct but only paid around $130 a piece I believe.

Do you know if that was their retail price? I ask because you mention a friend's account. Could that have been a wholesale price?

There was definitely a discount but the acct I used was a very low volume acct. I probably got around 20% off if I had to guess. I dealt with a guy named Chris who I believe was the manager.

WOW....
I paid 120 for an Interstate grp 27 and that hurt my feelings

I have 4 deep cycle group 27. Cost on last 4 $140 each. Next ones will come from Costco as they seem to be about 100 each.

My boat was delivered with 4 group 27 Interstates in 2003. For the 2004 season I replaced them with 4 group 31East Penn 8A31DT AGM batteries.
This is my 9th season with these batteries and I see no degradation in performance. If I ever have to replace them, it will be with East Penn/Dekas.

As far as retail pricing goes, we sell the Deka 27DC's for $129 (maybe $139... I don't recall exactly). Hopefully there's more to that $212 price because that does sound high if that price is just for the battery.

the last place I would buy a battery from is a boat dealer or marina

FYI, that pricing I quoted above is through a dealer... :smt001
