I always look forward to the winter solstice....the days start to get a little longer each day.....this means that longer, warmer days are on the way for the next boating season.....somehow knowing this gives me just a little mental boost during the winter months....we are fortunate we can boat all year in this region but winter boating is not the same as warm weather boating...........

My days will be longer - and better once we get back to the boat next week. Getting cloudy, rainy, and winter feeling in Texas (I know, not as cold as the north).

Amen. Till we get to go boating, I have a list of things on a white board in my office that I check off and the days getting longer is #1 followed by:

    Boat show
Average daily temperature starts to increase
    Indians spring training opens
    Buzzards return
    First day of spring
    Splash

    1 down. 6 to go...

The Cinci boat show is Jan 13, so if you want to scratch the boat show off the list quickly, just head a little south in 3 weeks. http://cincinnatiboatshow.com/

I'm with you 100% Cliff - a great day to celebrate! The Scandinavian's celebrate the Summer Solstice, but that is a sad day as far as I am concerned! Now that we winter in SW FL, it's not as bad as it used to be!! LOL!

GAAAD i hate when its dark at 4:30PM. It does make the Christmas lights nicer when you arrive home in the dark though. But being up north, the sun setting at 9:00PM in July is a nice compromise.

Yep - Love the Christmas Lights but I can not wait for those evenings that get dark at 9PM again. At least we pickup a few minutes each day now.

The days may be getting longer but the worst of winter may just be starting.....was 68 today in Charlotte. When we do get snow it's usually in February. The NC DOT has a clever and cost effective snow removal strategy...we wait until it gets warm and the snow melts.

January and February are killer around here.
Winter is manageable up until the New Year because cold days fit in to the holiday mood.
Once the sun sets on New Years Day it stops being fun.
March 1st is the target date. We could get a bitter March snowstorm, but there is usually hopes of a 60 degree day in the forecast so there is some hope.

Funny how us hardcore boating enthusiasts look at things through the bubbles in our wake. I love Dec 21st, simply for the fact it reverses the loss of light cycle. While it's a small victory, it is a victory in the quest moving towards another boating season. Cool weather remains the norm, but there's something about just knowing the days are getting longer. I also love the turbocharge of "springing forward", and picking up that big 60 minute boost as it means warm weather, and happy boating, is now within reach.

Summer solstice has the opposite affect, though it occurs when boating is often at it's finest. That day seems to click a boaters mental countdown, as somehow we inherently link the dwindling daylight to the eventual loss or downgraded boating ops for the year.

I am glad to be on the positive side now, and knowing we're on our march, a couple of minutes each day - to each of us enjoying our floating fix.

We went to bed last night with a very light snow falling and awoke this morning to about 3" of snow so anyone here who wished for a white Christmas got their Christmas wish.

Sure is purty outside and maybe after another cup of joe I'll get my jacket on and do some shoveling. In our area if we don't get it shoveled off quickly it will melt. Sounds like our snow removal system is similar to JimT's.

So Merry Christmas everyone. Enjoy your day, enjoy your life and enjoy your family.

Didn’t get dark until about 5:00 around here today. At least it’s a start.

So I've been in been living in Southern Louisiana for about 18 months now and the weather here is just weird. Three days last week we were high 70s-low 80s. It's cold today and supposed to get down to 7 degrees overnight of the 31st. We have too many plants to cover and wrap so I guess we're gonna lose some.

January and February can be rough here as well but just because it was last year does not mean it will be this year. So unpredictable....

NorCal.....I grew up just west of you in BR. As I look back on it, I assumed that winter was over when Mardi Gras parades began rolling. I miss those days.
