Cummins 6c Aftercoolers, Take a Look!

Back to the aftercoolers...

I don't have a dog in this one but there is an article on boatdiesel.com about the C and B series aftercoolers and how to maintain them. It also discusses the corrosion issues. The theory from the guy who wrote this is due to them being put together dry... I have no opinion on it but thought I would point it out.

Question?

Festivus, We walk in very different diesel worlds. The engines you have are cousins and your ER is much more ergonomic. You really just need to follow the Cummins service regimes. BTW, are you a member of that other board dealing diesels on boats?

Asureyez- Thanks for the info... although access to the outboard side of my engines doesn't feel very ergonomic to me...

And no, I am not a member of that board. I've looked at it... way to much information for me!

Dominic,

Aftercoolers are under that big flat plate on the top inboard side of the stbd and top outboard side of the port engine. Owners of Caterpillar 3116 and 3126 engines normally do not have aftercooler problems and there is no regular maintenance needed as long as you are using a single viscosity SAE engine oil containing no viscosity enhancers and rated CF-4 or higher.

While you gas boat guys may disagreee with dismissing gas engines in big boats, a blanket general statement that all diesels are expensive because one type of engine needs a 12K repair is completely incorrect.

Gas vs Diesel, Small boat vs Big boat, Searay vs....whatever, Ford vs Chevy, Viagra vs Cialis.......life is good here at CSR!!! To think....we could have missed this.

Gary, I'll have some of those pills if you don't mind. I have to get fuel and it will be painful!

Let my son John pull you around on a tube behind the jetski and the doctor will give you all you want.... and he'll call you a "fat old balding man" before he hits 40 mph in a turn.

In reading my spec sheet and cummins site it looks like the 480 CE is the 6CTA 8.3 M, not sure if the -3 makes it any different - can someone please clarify if this is in fact and if the 480CE will have the same aftercooler issue? Many thanks.

Hey Chad, if you ever need a helping hand with your boat, just PM me and I'll be glad to help you out. I'm pretty flexible and can move around the bilge.
