Is anyone up to speed on the freedom to go to Cuba act? I know that the bill was introduced in Feb. 2009 and was supposedly passed. Where it all goes from there I don't know.
I would just like to visit Cuba on my boat.

I'm right behind you...I have always been intrigued by Cuba and would go in a heart beat.

When I lived in Homestead during the Mariel Boat Lift, I had a neighbor that went down from Key West in a 26' Formula cruiser and picked his brother up at Mariel. He told me it was kind of like going to Bimini. He and I went to Cay Sal a few times and you could seen the mountains to the south with binoculars on a clear day.

As soon as they let us I want to go. I hear the fishing and diving on the south side around Isle of Pines is some of the best in the world.

If you check out the coastline of Cuba from satellite pics on google or elsewhere, it looks really cool with lots of reefs, bays, coves, estuaries, etc. The big problem initially will be lack of cruising infrastructure. I read in one of the boating rags that Cuba is gearing up, but it's years away.

Once it's legal, and with a properly self-sufficient vessel (including perhaps some form of self defense:grin:), it looks like it could be fun!

Hello Friends.
I read and show all post, photos and Video really Cuba is really too cool so give me reply which time is best for travel.
Thanks.

I'm sure our Communist Comrades would welcome us with open arms, take our boats and turn them into Sea Ray gunboats. Gimmee a break! How bout we get together and cruise to Somalia, nice countryside.

Fuel is somewhat an issue. Ther eis a fella in Marathon, he owns the Texaco Marine fuel place than keeps a active web sight on going to Cuba and all that can be known. At one time he had a list of locals that would help with fuel and provisions.

He has great tips for matriculation and dealing with policia

When you think of Cuba as a yachtsman, think crude facillities once away from Hemmingway.

Cuba is a great country to visit with very friendly people. In Havana there is a huge marina (Hemmingway). I have been to Varadero and Havana 5 times had a great time. I am a Canadian and we are allowed to go. As soon as peace is settled between U.S. and Cuba you guys should go ASAP.

I'm gonna stir the pot again. Anyone know how the Freedom to travel to Cuba act is coming along? As one could tell I'm really interested in going there. It's such an unspoiled paradise that it would be awesome to see.

Jack

I agree with you Jack about how awesome it would be to go there.....but unspoiled paradise??? you might rethink those words. Ric

who ever goes better bring back some freakin' cigars for me.

I guess I was looking at it from a boaters perspective. I'm all about what's going on in and around the water. I've heard that's pretty awesome. I assume the cities and such are as any third world country would be. Although probably would be pretty cool to see that also.

Jack

If you go, I'll be a deck hand.

My wife and I have been there three times and are going back in April.

Westie,
Do you take your 23 footer to Cuba, is that big enough? Where do you leave from? Sorry I'm trying to find out how small of a boat I could safely make such trips from Florida to Cuba, or the Bahamas, and even to cross lake Michigan.

I think that would be pretty tough to do from Canada in a 23ft boat. :wow:

It would definitely be an adventure (like a 3 hour cruise). A 23' across Lake Michigan can be dicey - I've seen 9' down to dead flat calm on a 5 hour stint from South Haven MI to Hammond, IN last year - It is amaizing what that lake can do (I've also seen it do just the opposite too! - in a LOT less time/distance).
