CSR Northeast Flotilla 2015

I'm thinking about some activities and have a question to all. Who has kayaks (hard shell or inflatable, single or double doesn't matter), which you plan bringing on the trip? I just know of 4 available kayaks. Greg has 2 inflatable ones, Larry has 1 hard shell and I have 1 inflatable. Anyone else has one?

If we have more, I was thinking it could be cool to have kayak race for the kids or a mixed teams, kids and adults.

We have a two person hard shell kayak that I can bring. Just let me make sure I can get it on the bow and that it will not block my view. And since I cannot carry both, I will rent bicycles instead of bring them.

Tough choice, but I would bring whatever would be used more frequently and easier to store.

How big is the kayak, can it fit on the swim platform?

BTW, that's the beauty of inflatable kayaks. You can store them in a bag, or just drop them on a side rail, or on a sunpad. They're very light and easy to store, secure and handle.

The following approach worked for me when I had to carry 4 bikes and wanted to keep the kayak always ready.

NG on the swim platform. The kayak is 14' long. The beam is 13'. The kayak is a Hobbie Mirage Tandem with the foot pedals that move fins underwater for propulsion. Besides, I have the dinghy on the swim platform and I need that more. I am not in a position right now or ready to spend the money on a new kayak when we have a really good one at home.

I was thinking of arranging the bikes and kayaks like that, but remember I do not have a Bridge, so I will need to look through them rather than over them. I will just need to experiment when I get the boat home.

You can see the kayak on the dock in the picture.

In this case, I'd say that the only good spot for your kayak is on the sunpad. That is IF you're comfortable securing it to the sunpad rails. If the kayak is too heavy, it may compromise the seals on the rails, making them leaky. Perhaps, you can offset the "load" by utilizing midship cleats. So, if all works well you can have a kayak in the middle and couple bikes on the port side rail.

That is how I was thinking of doing it. I am comfortable using the sunpad rails to secure the kayak, it is of moderate weight, but I think it will be fine. Again I just need to see if the bikes block my field of view.

I am not sure if anyone is interested in having a dinner together at a restaurant in Newport but I called around to a few places we know and I found one that would allow a reservation for a group our size. It is the Red Parrot, a very popular restaurant in Newport. It is family style, nothing too fancy but nice atmosphere, we have eaten there a few times and always had a good meal. I think it would be a good place for everyone to find something to eat that they like. It is located almost in the middle of town on Thames St., about a 5 minute walk from Newport Harbor Hotel. Here is thier website. http://www.redparrotrestaurant.com. They have 3 floors of dinning and we would be on the 3rd floor and we would be eating off the main menu. They allow separate checks no problem. Let me know if there is interest and I will book the reservation.

Thanks Jeremy. Looks good to us. Reading their seafood menu just made me hungry for the Swordfish Mediterranean!! Count us in.

The Red Parrot is a good place. I ate there last time I was in Newport at Larry's recommendation.

Alex,
I was unable to attend last year. I would like to attend this year. We would meet the flotilla in Newport and continue on from there. Shelter Island is a 3-4 hour trip for us. We are in the same area as Newport. If you can put us down as a strong maybe until we figure out the details, I would appreciate it.
Mike and Pam Mason. Someplace Else. 400DB.

i was thinking Tuesday night, does that work for everyone?
