Considering to install underwater lights.

UW Lights 2.jpgUW Lights.jpgHere is my 2nd attempt at the UW lights. I can't seem to get a good picture but they do work pretty good. Total cost was $200 for 4 lights. Well worth it in my opinion.

Bucit those lights look nice, I like the blue color. where did you get those under water lights for under $200?

Are those below or above the water line?

Also there has been some posts about the expense of lights and there installation if they fail, in my particular situation my boat is stored in a lift. If I every had to replace a light there is no haul out few or down time associated.

I got the lights from Doug (a CSR member) who goes by DougLas. The lights are installed below the water line on the transom. Installation was easy. I laid them out, drilled a 3/8" hole and fed the wire through (with 4200 in and around the hole) then wired them up to a fused switch. Here are the pictures after I installed them. I keep the boat on a lift as well and could be installed with it on the lift.

I'm starting to shop for these...I'd like them pretty bright. And LED. Are they measured in Watts? or Lumens? I see some with 5,000 lumens and others with 9W.
Any suggestions. I'm thinking 2 for the aft. and would use them for light while swimming. I would also prob spend 100.00 each.
Thanks

Groucho,

If your budget is limited to $100.00 each then your choices will also be significantly limited. I would think that you could purchase these from Doug and I don't even think I've seen any others that low. The one the OP is installing run about $200.00 a piece. Good luck!

After looking at the web site...The A-6's might be best(2). Cheap is forever...so I might as well get better ones...than be disappointed in the brighness.

If you look at lumitec's site and click on the seablaze icon in the lower left the next page has a picture of the seablaze brightness compared with several others including the ocean A6 and A12. I know propaganda is likely present since they are advertising and trying to sell there product.

I can tell you that the Seablaze 3 I recieved from Lumitech seems very well made. Feels solid, good finish, heavy gauge wire leads, epoxied into place, etc. If you want to wait a few months I can give you more first hand information on the functioning when I get them installed.

I just got 4 blue lights like your from DougLas. My question to you is how did you wire the lights up? what size breaker/fuse did you use?

i was going to use lumishore but they are very expensive. i saw them on ship shap tv and looked good. They are led and some switch colors. The top of the line models go for $5000.00 i thought they must be gold plated... never mind they must be sold gold!!! has any one use lumishore?

I ran the wires to a terminal block which I mounted juts above the batteries. I installed a switch inbetween the two battery swithces and I believe I used a 5amp (may have been 3amp) inline fuse.

I am a fan of Lumitec SeaBlaze 3 - my previous boat had the Abyss lights (PIECES OF CRAP!) and replaced two of the four Abyss with Lumitec when they failed. Sold that boat.

Put 3 of the dual color Lumitec on our new 340, and they are awesome. I should have gone with 4, but I was being cheap. Well worth the cost in my opinion. I do like the dual color (bright white, blue and combo).

My opinion is also that OceanLED is the best, but the cost is too prohibitive for most people. OceanLED has a line that won't break the bank, and I had a dock-mate install 3 of the on his transom last year and they are also spectacular.

Scott I am looking at Sblaze3 as well. How are your water conditions? (clear or murky) and how far out do they shine? would you get more light by just going with one color so all lights are on together or do you have the option for both. I have a 10.5 beam and was thinkng of 2 till I read you should have gotten 4? ouch. Are they wide beam lights or spread? thanks for the info so far. Rob

Check out Aqualuma, they have a plastic surround and can be serviced within the boat. Just bought 3 myself and pulling to install in April. May choose to go with a 4th still. Nice people, and have been very helpful!

I have bought 2 of the seablaze 3's that are all white but I have not installed them yet. My beam is not as wide as yours by 15 inches but now you guys have me maybe wanting to go with 4.

How do these newfangled LED's compare to high output halogen lamps? I have a pair of 150W Imtra HID Halogen underwater lights installed as through hulls on my transom probably a foot below the water line. I had to do the bulbs recently for around $500 installed when both of em blew out maybe because someone left them on while the boat was in the yard.

I have only turned them on twice and my marina water is pretty murky, but they shined clear over to the next dock in the marina, probably a good 30 feet away, and illuminated the two neighbors boats undersides nicely. Its been my experience owning reef fish tanks with halogen lamps that they will outperform an LED in power in all respects. Do the LED's match them for sheer brute illuminating power these days?

I guess the downside of mine is they are AC, so I have to run my generator if I am not on the dock.
