Compound & Wax

For clarification, "polish" often means a very, very mild compound that does the final smoothing and removal of fine scratches. Phase Four above could also be termed "Sealer". Starbrite Polish with PTFE is poorly named (in my opinion) to include the word "polish". It is not a polish but is rather a final sealer, as are products labeled "waxes". These products generally do not make any improvement to the gelcoat surface. They seal it up to protect it from weather and sun.

Thanks I'll make a change to the document, I keep it just to post it seems this comes up quite often on several of the forums I'm on. I never really thought about the terminology but did realize it was sealer for protection with PTFE. Meguiars calls it a polish & protectant which is still misleading Meguiar's® Flagship Premium Marine Paint Polish and Protectant.

I also added to the buffer section,

Buffers
I use these buffers there are many more on the market at all different price ranges.

Porter Cable 7424XP 6” Variable Speed Orbital Polisher

All fellow boaters,

I purchased the Dewalt DWTDWP849X variable speed dual action polisher after watching the videos and reading the reviews, plus I own other Dewalt power equipment. I believe I am going to start with the 3M products and pads suggested. I will let you all know how everything works out after I try a section on my boat.

Thanks for all the great information.

Good luck, I hope it works out well for you. You would save some labor by using Presta Supercut but the product you selected will work. Supercut is the best product on the market IMO.

Good point about the terminology the sealer and wax companies use. A lot of them have a very mild cleaner as part of them so maybe that's why they like to include the word polish in the name. Also, probably just to try to market it to people where someone told them to go buy a "polish". But to me, a polish is done before you seal, not instead of sealing. But I might just be hung up on purist semantics.

When I first did my boat I looked at several forums on what were the best products & steps to go through, I didn't want to do it twice. I've learned there are many products & opinions with most of the being excellent products & opinions. The first year I probably purchased 1 of each brand out there I was just looking at all the bottles of compounds to sealers in a large tote I've bought most still unopened at $20-$30 a bottle. Might have a fire sale. I also like the Presta Supercut only when needed.

Yeah, me too! I bought and tried several products and had a detailer try to get mine to shine. Supercut brought her back to like new!

Fine! Yall have swayed me to go finish buffing the boat.

Bob & Sue,

With this being my first time to try to bring the shine back to the gelcoat on a boat, I appreciate the posting of the document. I will certainly follow the steps per the documents recommendations. I almost purchased the Porter Cable, but since I own other Dewalt products that was the swaying point. I do have a 90 day return policy should I not be satisfied with this rotary variable speed polisher. I also purchased a small of 3M MARINE rubbing compound & (1) can of 3M Marine Ultra Performance Wax after reading reviews. I am not sure if it was you, but Presta Supercut compound may save me some time & labor. I will purchase a small quantity of that product to compare against the 3M products.

Thanks again,

CS Mady

Fellow boaters,

A 7" inch backing plate came with the Dewalt polishers that I purchased. Any recommendations for the best buffing and waxing pads to use for this buffer. I am looking at the Lake Country 8.5 " products. I am not really sure if these pads will fit on this buffing wheel. I would like to purchase the correct product without having to ship back to the supplier.

If I already owned a Dewalt that's what I'd use the document has changed & I have added several suggestions from this post to it. The document is meant as a good starting point for anyone to get ideas from many different points of view & experiences. There are many great products out Presta is one of them. I have a tote full of products I've tried it gets expensive at $20-$30 a bottle.

The document is easier to post than re-writing it every time the question comes up & it comes up a lot that's how it got started when I first posted the same question about 5 years ago, Use what you have then experiment with other products if you don't get the results you want.

Do you have a harbor fr-ight near you I buy most of my pads thru them they are a lot cheaper, easier to justify throwing away rather than cleaning them. I also purchase some 3M finishing pads from a local detail wholesaler. Doubt an 8.5" will fit a 7" plate.

Yes, I have a HF about 20 minutes away. Also, have a West Marine boating supply house less than 5 minutes away, but everything in there I found was expensive. I will bring the backing plate with me to ensure I get the correct pads. Since, this will be my first trial run using cheaper pads may be the way to go until I get good at using this rotary buffer.

Thanks,

Yah good catch not sure how that mistake happened.

I just bought a boat that didn't look so good. The 1500 grit and wet sanding then buffmagic worked well. Just the buffmagic wasn't enought.
