I had this same problem the backing dried out and began to flake. I remove as much of the gry backing as possible then sprayed it with this stuff called plastic dip

thanks Brian , i need to fix it i think PLASTI DIP will solve this problem

I used Durabak on my 280 carpets and that worked good.

I also used Durabrak for my 320 and it worked great. There were also good comments on Grizly Grip.

I just got my NEW Aqua Mat in today from Corinthian Marine Carpet and it is absolutely fabulous!!! I'm going to the marina in a little while to place it and see how the fit is.

Previous owner put new snapincarpets cockpit carpeting with the crappy backing beginning of 2011 season. When I took them up this past fall, the black backing was already starting to stick in tiny spots. So, I am trying an experiment that I saw mentioned somewhere on here. I bought a $24 100sq ft roll of floating floor thin padding. Its just a really small/thin bubble wrap. I cut it to fit and placed it under the carpet. Nice thing is it adds a very comfortable slight cushion to the carpeting. I have no idea if it will just end up being a water trap leading to mold, but I am going to leave it on all season and see what happens. I'll take my chances with that over the black backing issue.

I haven't had a problem with the black backing coming off....yet! I wonder if treating the floor with the Starbrite non skid cleaner with Teflon helps every year? Anyway, when I do change mine I will try the new backing. I hate the smell of the original.

I also upgraded last spring to the Corinthian product. It is simply great.
