This will be the first year cleaning this boat ,dealer did it last year when we bought it, my question is
i usually clean the "white" hull with collinite cleaner then wax it. Can I use this same cleaner on a black hull? I'm not sure if my hull is black gel coat or painted black here's why in my papers I found this "build sheet" is says the boat has a white hull I'm wondering if this is something the previous owner added at the last minute? Or had done later after delivery ,he was the original owner. I will attach a pic of the build sheet below thanks.

Joe,

I'm not sure if you'll need any spots compounding, but I don't think skipping a polishing step is a good idea. I would say that your basic steps would be at least:
1. Clean
2. Polish
3. Wax

Yes you can use 920 on a colored hull. Here's the spec sheet. Looks fine for painted surfaces too if that's the case. http://www.collinite.com/assets/Uploads/docs/marineselector726.pdf[/QUOTE

the 920 is what I've used and it REALLY cleaned my 320 white hull , even after you think it's clean it's not, until you use this stuff. But it says" white or light silver only" bummer. What else should I use to get the cleaning effect of the 920 ? Or do I need to clean a black hill as much?

View attachment 29238Alex, the Collinite instructions say :Collinite Fiberglass Boat Cleaner #920 removes the existing oxidation, which prevents it from spreading, and restores the original color and luster of the gelcoat fiberglass. Once you apply wax over the clean, bright finish, it will prevent future oxidation and maintain the shine. I guess that's why I never needed to "polish" it brings back the shine then wax over it. I think this stuff is great look at my 9 year old 320 shine!!!!

Look at the bottom of the build sheet if you have it. The white hull may show as standard at the top of the sheet, but there may also be an option near the bottom for the black hull. IT is an expensive option so you should see a 4 figure number in the cost column.

I've seen 920 used on blue and pewter hulls and they end up just as spectacular as white. Below says it restores COLOR...so you'll be fine. As good as 920 and 885 work together, polishing isn't worth the time. I don't know of anybody who uses Collinite properly who needs a polish step.

"Collinite 920 is a pre-wax cleaner. It is not a heavy duty compound, but does contain mild cut abrasives and cleaning agents in the formula. It helps to remove surface contaminants from marine fiberglass surfaces as well as restoring the color and appearance of a finish. No. 920 can also be used for preparing a surface for follow up applications of wax, or for removing previous applications of wax for a uniform finish."

Come on nice weather so Havan Shamrock don't have to look at his build sheet anymore and can just drive the boat.

I have a dark blue hull and tried a number of products over the last six years I have had the boat.

What I settled on a few years ago was Meguiar's Flagship. By using Flagship not only will you get a great shine and lasting protection but it is a one step operation. Flagship has a small amount of cleaner in it and if you apply it with an orbital buffer and a wool pad it will do light compounding (getting rid of minor scratches and water spots) and it will protect at the same time. One pass and your done. Flagship is a polymer and it bonds to the gel coat. If you want even more protection apply a very thin second coat by hand and then towel it off. I get compliments all the time on my "shine" and folks are suprised when I tell them it is a 2006 Sea Ray.

Look into Yacht Brite Buff Magic while you are it. Great cleaner to use before polish and wax. Also excellent for metal. Flagship is a good wax to use.

Dave S, I have a 2005 340 with a Navy Blue hull that is new to me this season. Typically my detailer does a light micro compound and then polishes it with a coat of wax. My hull is not chalking and really looks good, just water spots and a nice brightening would be good. You are saying that Meguiar's Flagship is the one coat ticket? How loing have you been using it?

I used the Mequires Polish with a wool pad first and then used the Mequirers Flagship wax. Turned out really nice.

This is what I do on my blue hull. Every 6 months I clean sometimes with Meguiars #44, sometimes with Meguiars #49 and sometimes with Buff Magic, depending on the area. I also have Presta Supercut as the most aggressive cleaner in the arsenal, but so far nothing has been oxidized enough to use it. Then I polish with Meguiars #45. I absolutely love this stuff for sealing the gelcoat and bringing out a shine. Then I wax with Meguiars Flagship Premium Wax (the one without the cleaner in it). During the season I do one step touchups with Meguiars Flagship Premium Cleaner Wax. I do all the cleaning with a wool pad on a Makita 9227 rotary. All the polishing with a foam pad on a Shurhold orbital. And the waxing by hand.
