while out on anchor Sunday Morning I washed the deck with a bucket tied to a rope, thought the side windows were closed , The water came in and soaked the cabinet and stereo, wiped everything down and now the head unit is dead? the fuses are good, I thought these were water proof?

Now I need to either send it out for repair or upgrade to a new head unit while keeping the helm remote, any suggestions would be great.

Plenty of tem on eBay.

I noticed that last night too, refurbished units, I guess I'm puzzled how a marine unit can be dead from a little bit of water, I like the unit, it's now 3 days latter and was hoping it would dry out and come back to life LOL just put juice to it.. still no life.

marinized is more rust resistant...not waterproof
biggest difference is stainless chassis as opposed to aluminum
and sealed boards...but not that well sealed

Gary, The face of the unit is what is water resistant, but from what you're describing, it sounds like the water came from the backside of the panel and came in contact with the back section of the radio (the part that's mounted so the face is flush. If that's the case, pull that puppy out and replace it. I'm pretty sure you will still be able to use the factory wiring harness if you decide to go with a newer unit. So it'll be a plug and play thing, good luck.

I had to replace my Clarion radio this past spring. The old remote at the helm was not compatible with the new clarion, nor was the wiring harness. I had the new radio installed buy a "professional", but I installed the new remote I had to buy because he couldn't figure out how to run the remote's wire from the helm to the radio's location. The old remote was oval and the new remote is round. Used a dremel tool to alter the old hole.

I found a nice used CMD6 and it's all good now! but I question why we're using water tight head units if it's only the face that is water tight :smt013

The thought process behind that is on smaller runabout boats the stereo is at risk for more exposure to the elements. So they make the face water tight only. In reality it's just a very thin piece of rubber insulating the face from the base unit.
