Choices: 460DA vs 480DB

He said you were right on, the ball valve failed, and that's what caused the problem after the fuel filter changes. But, not sure of exactly what went down? Didn't stay on top of the story, this mechanic then got a detached retina, things then got more cloudy, after surgery and ordering rebuilt injectors (why order injectors?), and then finding some bad ones, and this and that, he finally got it all working. The boat ran fine on its 5 mile run to storage. Havent got the bill to see what exactly what was done and haven't talked to him on what he exactly did. Business has been busy, but have to go up there and pay him and talk this out. Questions:

1. One mechanic accused the other of using ether to get the engine started. Can one still smell the ether let's say 2-3 days, maybe a week, after using it?
2. What are the problems using ether as a starter?

What happened originally was that the engine started fine after complete fuel filter change, and when i brought it to power, it stalled out. went back and called it quits that night.

Next morning, we noticed with mechanic 1 that the primer pump was not closed. He primed for about 30 seconds, closed it, fiddled with the valve, and the engine started fine, ran it up to 2000 rpm at the dock, all ok, then taxied out, brought up power and stalled.

Did this again, but thought the main engine fuel filter was a problem, changed that, primed, and same stall.

Mechanic 1 who does the filters, minor mx etc, was stumped, brought it the guy who did tuned it this early summer before 1000 island trip and that's when 2 said 1 used ether to start it and then the nice dynamics started. I called you and explained exactly to m1 what you said. Take off the main filter, prime the pump with it open and you should see fuel. close the valve, prime and you should not see fuel. M1 called me and said , Ub, everything is ok, i primed it and fuel came out and when i closed it, fuel came out, so everything OK. that is when i knew i definitely I had a not ok M1.

Don't know why M2's diagnosis of a vball valve failure, coulped with a bad injector would make him change all the injectors?

Will report back to you when i talk to him...thanks for checking.

Great time to boat shop???

Since I last posted a week or two ago, we have been actively shopping for the next "Jaws". All boats are out of the water now and we had ten inches of snow (see photo) overnight with freezing rain this afternoon and more snow forecast for the next two days. What does this mean? It should be a great time to purchase a boat while the white stuff is falling.

A boat purchase in the Great Lakes at this time of year has a different set of parameters. You can't take the vessel for a "spin" and a seller will not take the vessel off the market for six months while you wait for the water to return to the liquid state just so you can do a sea trial. So, there are issues to consider such as holdbacks and dealer vs. brokered (or private) deals.

On each boat that we have seriously considered at least I was able to use an Electrophysics GRP33 moisture meter to do a preliminary check of the hull. That in itself is an eye opener as I saw more than one cored hull that I would reject. Most hulls however were great and I'll let a professional surveyor do their job. So, we now are in the final stages of making an offer. Luckily I have no boat to sell (that was three months ago), no financing issues. So, I can safely assume that I should be able to strike the very best deal at this time of year.

I want to thank everyone for their valuable input. I feel that I have gained the knowledge required to make the best purchase possible. This will be our first diesel boat to own (although I have run a sportfish in The Keys and Bahamas) and right up until this weekend the debate between 460DA and 480DB continued. We will make an offer soon and the admiral is not necessarily pleased with my choice, but I think she'll be persuaded.

I'll keep you posted and fill in the details if anyone is still interested.

James

I'm definitely interested also....especially if you're decision is the DA....although the DB is my choice, the admiral doesn't like bridge boats...argh!!!....

I also am interested in your choice. Good luck with your purchase - whatever it might be!

Best of luck to you in your search for the next "Jaws". We love our 460 - so we have been reading this thread with interest. Our interior is also Maple and we love it, as do many who come aboard. It really opens up the boat down below. Our 480CE's provide plenty of power and are very efficient also. The 480DB is a great boat-just dfferent, You would be happy with either in sure. We have a hard top & a lift and love both of those features, the KVH is enjoyed dockside. Heck, get what you want 'cause this isn't your "last-boat", f you are like any of us on this forum.

Finally made up our minds,....and the winner is...

A few days ago, with the list down to two 460DA's and two 480DB's we trecked down to Michigan to visit Colony Marine (a large S.R. dealer) who we have gotten to know quite well. They had in stock a '01 480DB and a '02 460DA which were boats that we crawled through at least a couple of times. To suit our tastes the 480 would need some canvas work and a dinghy roller system. I would also meet with a Cat technician and discuss these 3196's with 600 hrs. (Sorry guys, couldn't afford QSM's in a newer boat). It was a very well equipped boat otherwise.

The 460 would need a camper back (our preference) and cockpit A/C. It has the Cummins 6CTA with 300 hrs., a maple interior and a Florida Bow Thrusters hydraulic platform. On the 460 we didn't mind the maple and the lift is something that we wanted to at least try out. Both boats were excellent but this 'Dancer was a 10 out of 10.

We stayed near Detroit overnight and at dinner I told my wife that we would finally have to make up our minds. She told me she wanted the 480DB; absolutely loved the boat. So for one night I owned the Sedan Bridge in my mind. Love the layout, love the performance and the "wow" factor. But I'm an express guy. Then I started thinking about the 3196 thing again, the small platform, the fact that my marina would have trouble handling winter storage, running the genny at anchor for the Sub Zero units (or the expense of a big inverter system).

In the morning she noticed I hadn't slept well so she said "We're buying the 'Dancer now?" So we put in an offer then went to look at it again. She said that she could certainly get used to this express boat and this is a really nice example. Maybe next time around it will be a bridge boat.

So that's how close the decision really was for us. We are now happy owners of a 460 Sundancer and can't wait for the ice to thaw. I want to thank everyone again for their inputs and hope to see some of you on the water. Mackinac, here we come.

Congrats. I will try not to look down on you (from the bridge that is). Good luck with your boat. Some fake green plants realy help the Maple look BTW. Real ones, if you have a green thumb.

James, Good luck with your new boat and Congrats! Glad to see another 460 owner on the board. I also am a Colony Customer, We have been on that boat in the fall, It is a nice one, you will love it! Where will you dock the boat, as you live in Waterloo?? It's funny I was just looking at the boat this weekend on the Colony web site- I guess they will have it marked Sold soon. Try to make some Colony rendevouis this coming summer as they are a great time.

Thanks to everyone for their encouragement and wishes.

Our boating will be based in Victoria Harbour, Georgian Bay, Ontario which is located near the gorgeous cruising grounds (just watch your charts) of the Thirty Thousand Islands. We are also near the terminus of the Trent Severn Waterway at Port Severn.

Our regular trips have taken us to Mackinac Island and beyond into Lakes Michigan, Superior. We've also been to Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Thousand Islands of the St. Lawrence. We could base our boat in Lake St. Clair since the drive is the same two and a half hours but we really like the north and have had our base there for fifteen years. However I think it would be a blast to get together with the Colony owners group and we will try to hook up you guys this summer.

Hull Numbers and Coring???

There was some discussion previously on this thread regarding hull numbering from Sea Ray. We were discussing this with respect to when S.R. deleted the balsa coring in the sides of certain vessels, namely 460DA and 480DB.

After some confusion on my part (plus some S.R. reps) I now believe I know the answer. For example, my vessel is a 2002 460 DA, hull number 527. On the H.I.N. embossing on the starboard quarter, this is the number that shows up on the second line right after "460DA" while the Sea Ray designation, assembly plant, coast guard required H.I.N. and date of manufacture are on the line above.

Sea Ray started deleting Balsa from the sides of the 460DA but not the bottoms, starting with hull number 617 in 2001. My number is 527 so S.R. told me that my sides were cored,...no problem, I don't mind having cored sides.

Still puzzled, I phoned again and learned that Sea Ray starts the numbering process in this model over again each year starting with # 501. So my boat is actually 2002-527 (27th 460 produced in '02), therefore not cored sides. As I said the coring doesn't make a difference to me but some of us were confused over the numbering. The 480DB has a similar situation but different number in deleting hullside coring in 2001, I believe.

i too am in the market ( actually in contact on a 510da ) with the 3196's and thinking to get the cat engine survey if she passed get the transferable yacht policy/insurance and call it a day.
