Looking into purchasing a first boat...a 1986 268 Weekender. Part family boat, part dad-needs-to-get-away boat.

Of course I have questions....and of course I searched! (the entire internet actually......which brought me here)

Still have to work out a final number with the seller but I'm hoping that, by the 20th, I will have this nearly turn-key tub in my driveway for somewhere around 7k (that's with trailer, dinghy, canvases, safety equipment, bumpers, etc). I say "driveway" since I will be faced with repairing a couple window leaks before I am comfortable enough to dunk this in the drink and leaving it there for the week.

As of right now I'm working on sourcing the cabin window frame perimeter seals and/ or the felt seals beyond having to go to Taylor Made (who tells me they will sell only to dealers) and being stuck with the mark up as a result.

The seller has mentioned a company called Schlegel who is (allegedly) responsible for making the seals in question. I am still trying to dig into that to understand a more.

With that all said, I am very excited to soon have a place to go where there isn't a road in sight.

Open to questions and comments

Welcome to CSR!

Thank you.

Boat Ed class coming up on Saturday....figure I should know how to do this boating thing in an official capacity. Next year we will be in fresh water only while we get the boat set up to our liking (and update some of the equipment) but I am deeply intrigued by the ocean. First things first though.

Coincidentally, I've been learning all sorts of knots for tree climbing which lends itself nicely to boating it seems.

Anyone know what the deal is with these window seals being so elusive? Only clear-cut info I have so far is that Taylor Made can send me samples and I can buy in whatever lengths of these samples, albeit through a dealer. I have not been successful at finding any direct info here or perhaps my search words need improvement.

I'm guessing my questions will be better addressed in the Classic section....?

Regardless, I am very excited to be posting that the trigger has been pulled!

Seller included plenty of propellers (not sure why anyone needs 5 but ok), a 5hp Evinrude w/fuel tank for the Achilles dinghy, documented repair history in 2 binders, various products for cleaning, teak care and maintenance...the list goes on.

This week is register everything and be in the water next weekend.

No pics yet but imagine a blue and white boat.

nice find Mike. i want to replace some of mine

Just to add to the information already posted in this thread, after Mr Blake posted the link to American Marine, I became inspired to understand more about sourcing window seals and in the process discovered a rubber extrusion manufacturer in the UK called COH Baines.

Their catalogue is quite extensive

Maybe this helps, maybe not. Seems there are options out there though.

Does anyone know how to shut off the forum's auto save feature? Very annoying.
