Mercury 5.0 Bravo III
Hi all;

I have a new-to-me SR 220 Select with 5.0 Bravo III. 115 hours. Looks and runs great. This weekend I got a beep and a Check Engine message on my smart gauge. It starts rough and needs some throttle to get going. It will stall at idle if I don't feather the throttle. Once I get going on plain it runs great. but it beeps once every couple of minutes. Oils are at level, temperatures and pressures within limits.

I've read about a common IAC valve issue. I took mine off to see if it need cleaning but it is spotless inside. It looks absolutely new. It's painted black like the motor so I believe it is original.

I'm going to take it into the mechanic as soon as I can to get properly checked but I thought I'd ask here if this sounds like something common that I can repair myself.

bty, I boat in the upper niagara river so I can't afford to be testing anything out on the water. It needs to be in best condition possible.

Cheers.

If it looks clean it could be

1. It was recently cleaned in an attempt to correct the stalling (before you bought it)

2. It was recently replaced with a low quality replacement in an attempt to correct the stalling.

Thanks

I took it to a mechanic to be working on tomorrow. I want them to look a the code to be sure it isn't something else. Also since I have a smart gauge that shows "check engine" message, he said he will have to clear that code after they change the valve. I'm not sure it that's true or not. I'll update later.

Update, mechanic says the code was for the AIC valve so he changed it. It was very clean but seized. During the test he thought it was still running rough so he looked at the cap and rotor and saw a lot of corrosion and pitting so he changed those, and went ahead and did the plugs too. $850 canadian including 2 hours labour at 110. I took it out for a spin and its running much smoother than it was. I'm pleased with the work and happy I dont have to crawl in there to do the plugs.

by the way all my regular shops couldnt get it in until after labour day, these guys told me to bring it in on monday when I called and they finished it the next day. Glad I can squeeze some more boating days in this season.
