Mike,
Welcome and thanks. I am planning on launching at East harbor state park...thoughts? I want a fairly short run from Middle Bass Sunday morning when we need to get back to the truck & trailer....thanks again.
This is my first post here as I just signed up after reading for a few days while waitiing for my '07 260 sundancer. I just sold my 22' sportcraft cuddy to my brother so am without a boat for a few days. Anyway, was reading this thread and noticed that a group of you are trailering up from down south and were talking about the best lauch sites in Sandusky. Having lived here for 10 years I can't think of anything worse than pulling a 35' boat around the narrow streets of Sandusky, especially in all that cedar point traffic so I thought I would offer an alternative. About 5 miles east of Sandusky is the little port of Huron Ohio. They acquired some land and just finished a huge brand new boat launching facility on the huron river. I believe it has 6 ramps and you launch directly into 30 foot of water with nothing tricky about exiting the river to lake erie as the channel is deep for lake ore and lime boats. The ramp facility is FREE to the public, is directlyoff a four lane highway (route 6 I believe), has launch prep lanes and tie down lanes after recovery so there is usually no waiting to lauch, has restroom facilities, is very well lit, virtually no crime, completely paved with loads and loads of parking for vehicles with trailers, several marinas nearby in case of emergency parts needs etc, and did I mention that it is FREE! After launching, it is only a short trip north to the lake and is a nice boat ride over to cedar point after entering the lake past the light house. If you google "huron river camera" you will get a camera that will let you control the view and you can check out part of this facility to see what I am talking about. You can also check out boat traffic, lake conditions, wind direction (lime facility smoke stacks that act as our local wind gauge) the huron boat basin and a few marinas. It may not show on mapquest yet but it was built on the former ConAgra grain elevator site if that helps with the directions.
Just thought you might like a convenient alternative to Sandusky. It is a really nice facility.
Mike
