Cedar Point

If you have AAA you can get a $10 discount. We were over there this week end and the alge in the lake has pertty much cleared up. still a little but not bad. The last 2 weeks pryor my wife would not even get in the water looked like green slime.

I just read something about the algae bloom. Ugh. Does that affect the sandbar area in the bay to the west of CP.

Just what washes up on shore. We was at the sand bar acouple of weeks ago and no alge on the side back to johnson Isl

The sandbar is somewhat protected by from the lake so hopefully it is fine. A couple of weeks ago it looked like the entire lake from East harbor North was glowing green. I think it's worse this year just because is been so hot. Didn't prevent me from getting in but thought twice about it... If there is a southerly wind it should push it to open water.

Sadly looks a little like the Spill in the Gulf. Cant imagine what those folks are going through...

So, what's the water temp in the bay area. I have a feeling we are going to be in for a shock. Spent the entire weekend floating around in 88 degree water down here. Literally feels like a hottub after the sun goes down.

Up there, I'm guessing 75-77 at best??

The water temp in 8' of water next to east harbor state park beach this weekend is 77. The kids swam ashore and said it was a lot warmer in a little shallower but I am chicken to anchor much closer. Sand bar goes up in a hurry if your anchor slips alittle then your to close.

Yikes! Where's that thread about shrinkage etc? I think we were warmer than that on Memorial day. I remember growing up on the lake and not being phased by it but I'm a wimp now. Love our 80/90 degree water.

My neice came up from fla last year spent 2 weeks with us summer was cold and water barely got up to 70. she said what time of the year does the water get warm? I told her thats as good as it will get. We are loving this warm water. Just jump in come to the top screem and in 3 min it will feel warm.

If you are on Catawba Island and are looking for a good beach to anchor up to Gem beach is not bad. I go out of Fox Haven Marina and Gem Beach is just around the corner We also anchor Next to East Horbor State park beach as well. It is a strech of beach uninhabited you can walk to East Harbor State park beach. Let me know if you are interested on finding out more.

Could be. But were I was at my smart craft computer said it was 77 and the Noaa has it listed at 74 at several locations. Im sure it varies depending on how clear the water is. I hope you can find the warmer water. My Ba--s said 70s as well. Maybe the slime the last couple of weekends shaded it where I was at. None the less great swimming on hot day.

This is my first post here as I just signed up after reading for a few days while waitiing for my '07 260 sundancer. I just sold my 22' sportcraft cuddy to my brother so am without a boat for a few days. Anyway, was reading this thread and noticed that a group of you are trailering up from down south and were talking about the best lauch sites in Sandusky. Having lived here for 10 years I can't think of anything worse than pulling a 35' boat around the narrow streets of Sandusky, especially in all that cedar point traffic so I thought I would offer an alternative. About 5 miles east of Sandusky is the little port of Huron Ohio. They acquired some land and just finished a huge brand new boat launching facility on the huron river. I believe it has 6 ramps and you launch directly into 30 foot of water with nothing tricky about exiting the river to lake erie as the channel is deep for lake ore and lime boats. The ramp facility is FREE to the public, is directlyoff a four lane highway (route 6 I believe), has launch prep lanes and tie down lanes after recovery so there is usually no waiting to lauch, has restroom facilities, is very well lit, virtually no crime, completely paved with loads and loads of parking for vehicles with trailers, several marinas nearby in case of emergency parts needs etc, and did I mention that it is FREE! After launching, it is only a short trip north to the lake and is a nice boat ride over to cedar point after entering the lake past the light house. If you google "huron river camera" you will get a camera that will let you control the view and you can check out part of this facility to see what I am talking about. You can also check out boat traffic, lake conditions, wind direction (lime facility smoke stacks that act as our local wind gauge) the huron boat basin and a few marinas. It may not show on mapquest yet but it was built on the former ConAgra grain elevator site if that helps with the directions.
Just thought you might like a convenient alternative to Sandusky. It is a really nice facility.

Mike,
Welcome and thanks. I am planning on launching at East harbor state park...thoughts? I want a fairly short run from Middle Bass Sunday morning when we need to get back to the truck & trailer....thanks again.

When you get to middle bass go to Walleyes and order a beer tube. Neat as heck, its a little glass beer keg they set at your table with a freeze stick inside of it to keep your beer cold. Make sure you have several people to help you drink it, I thought it was neat.

Quint,

Another option is the ramp at Catawba Island State Park, next to the Catawba Island Club. My guess is that the distance from Middle Bass to either Catawba Island or East Harbor is about the same.

About two-three years ago there was a sizable hole in the concrete ramp (near the water) at East Harbor. At the time we were new to the launching/retrieving routine and it made me somewhat nervous. Unfortunately, I don't have any updated information since we use other ramps in the area. You may also want to check out Zorba's comments about East Harbor in Post #28 of this thread.

Thank you for this information. I'm going to look into this. Is it on the east or west bank of the river? Is it easy to find off Rt 6?

Cincy,

The ramp is located right off Route 6. It is on the east bank of the river. If you are heading east on Route 6, just after crossing the bridge over the Huron River, you will make a left hand turn.

It is a nice facility as described by Mike.
