I'd try getting MM to pay it, or at least half. They want to move the boat now that the season is wrapping up.

Jeff:
According to the salesman, MM is doing their own full survey of the boat this weekend prior to them taking it in on trade....I may be able to at least see that survey before I move forward.....

I'll get to the Caterpillar problema areas later today.

Thanks Frank...

I spoke with the MM salesman and he said that they had the 410 surveyed today. He said he doesn't see a problem with me getting a copy of that survey and that he will try and get me a copy early next week because he will be at the Annapolis show this weekend.

He wasn't sure if there was a seperate engine survey.

MM is pushing to get the 410 into their possesion quickly so that they can move on closing the 60DA that was purchased. This is keeping my deal on the fast track....and I haven't even seen the boat yet....

Would I be wrong to consider using the MM survey as my survey and just have the engines surveyed :smt017 ? Since MM is warranting the boat, does this make sense?

Due diligence is your responsibility as buyer. Your goal and MM's are 2 different goals.....they want to be sure that they are not buying a pig in a poke loaded with major problems....your goal is to find out everything you can about the boat and uncover everything that will cost you money, time or inconvienence to deal with.

I'm on thin ice here, but I am a conservative and subscribe to the school of thought that I am sure there are honest sales people out there, but the last guy on earth that I will believe when I'm writing a 6 figure check is the salesman who is on commission and does not get paid until I write that check. Don't be rude, but do be careful and verify everythng a commissioned salesman tells you from an independant source...i.e. his boss, the service manager, the f&i guy, Sea Ray, Caterpillar, Club Sea Ray.......and be careful to listen to the qualifiers "I believe", "I Think", I'm sure". and don't accept anything but a complete and specific answer to every question you ask.

It is not uncommon to spend $4-5000 in engine and hull surveys and legal fees to handle buying a boat like this. Don't scrimp...it could be very expensive.

Thanks Frank....I agree...I just needed to hear it from someone else....I have $5K in the budget just for the surveys and Misc closing stuff....

PS...you have a PM

later,

Dominic,
Would you be willing to share what specific items you consider in your misc. and closing budget.

I built a budget and tracking tool for everything included in a purchase from survey to transport and taxes when we bought our 340 on an MS Excel spreadsheet and would be willing to share it here for anyone here who does not know what comes down the pipe when you buy a vessel.

Alex:

My "misc" budget entry in my worksheet is more of a place holder that I used for Hull and Engine survey along with the Dealer rip-off, I mean documentation fees and state registration fees. I have seperate entries in my work sheet for purchase price, trade in price, taxable amount, tax to be paid, etc....

Dom,
For what it's worth, Searay has Giles and Ransom on Egg Harbor Road in Hammonton listed on their site as an authorized Caterpillar marine service center (609) 561 0308. Good luck.

Thanks Frank...I'll give them a call.....did you have your engines surveyed when you bought Impulse III? I am curious to know what they did for 8hours!!!

Also, did you trade in your 340DA on your 410DA...I've never traded in a boat before, I have always sold outright....any words of wisdom for trading in a boat.....

I'm thinking maybe I should start a new thread......this has gone beyond 3116/3126 comparisons......

thanks,

This is interesting. Is MM providing a used boat warranty? If yes this is something new. If not - MM is a reputable dealer and will correct some undiscovered used boat issues to generate good will. There is a limit. Get an independent survey, do not use a MM survey or MM recommended surveyor. It is in your best interest to get an unbiased assessment of the boat and engines.

Dom,
When I bought ImpulseIII I did trade in ImpulseII (the 340). The tax savings outweighed the potential extra money I may have gotten selling her myself and the fact that MM took care of all the paperwork had some value as well.

I did not have the engines surveyed (maybe dumb on my part) but the surveyor did do an engine and transmission oil analysis. The boat only had 210 hours on her and I checked with Cat to see if the engines had any history. They had a clean bill of health so far as Cat was concerned so I took the chance. The boat also had the extended warranty so I felt a bit protected. Maybe it was naive on my part but it worked out for me.

What year are you looking at and what Marine Max are you dealing with?

Jon:

The Salesman said (I know.... :smt021 ....I know) that MM would offer some warranty....very minimal, but basically it would cover against catastrophic failure for the first 30days.....

Frank H:

Let me be perfectly frank (no punn intended)....I have still not even seen the 410 yet....I only have a binder and every call to the salesman just gets me the the old "....don't worry....everything is just fine...." reply.

I am not yet in a position to play hardball with the salesman. I still have to get a fully executed contract in my file before the gloves can come off....until then, I have to grin and bare with it.

I started out working with a Sommers Point salesman and then got shuffled up to a Bryant Beach salesman....

I'll tell you all how this really started and that was with "Dream Catcher's" 2003 410DA that he traded in on his new 58 Sedan.....Dream Catcher/Seagull...you out there....you must have made a good deal, because they couldn't discount the price of your 2003....they said (Iknow.. :smt021 .. I Know) that there wasn't enough $ in the deal.....and then this 2001 came in the following week at close to $90000 less.....

Dom, I know the season is rapidly coming to an end but if you want to go for a ride in a 2001 410 with 350HP Cats, let me know and we will be more than happy to take you and yours out for a run. Can't do it this weekend but any time after that (including during the week) we can meet and you can take her out and see how you like it. As long as the boat is still in the water and not decommissioned, my offer is wide open....

Well...nothging like quoting yourself. :smt017 ..anyway..It just might be SOONER.. :smt038 ..I just got through with a few phone calls from a local dealer and I have a "binder" on 2001 410DA.. ..subject of course to all the obvious....sea trial, inspection, survey, etc, etc....

Here I go quoting myself again...anyway.... it turns out that the paper says that my binder is on a 2001, but the boat in fact is a 2000....that in itself isn't so terrible...the biggest issue is the engines....the 2000 definetly has the 3116's......I am scheduled to "FINALLY" see the boat this Saturday....the salesman is making the arrangements....I was told that the electronics are the original Raytheon 41xx radar, 398 gps, 601 plotter , 6001 autopilot and ray220 vhf type of stuff with the addtion of a northstar 952 and ICOM 602 vhf....I'll have to see how they are mounted...I am not very fond of things sticking up on top of the dash (see my avatar)....and the TV's down below have been replaced with LCD....Not sure if there is bowtruster, oil exchange sytem or engine sychronizer......more to follow....

If it matters, you don't need a bow thruster and the added weight, the boat handles great without it. The oil change system should be standard equipment and you will find the synchronizer to be one of the most useful things on the boat. In fact, I've never seen a diesel boat in our area without a synchronizer, but Sea Ray considers it an option.

Frank, Dave:

I agree with you both with regard to the bowtruster...never found the need for it on my 380...in fact, when I was looking for the 380, I specifically chose my boat over another 380 because it didn't have the truster....just another maintenance item in my opinion....the oil exchanger and engine sychronizer, on the other hand, I consider an absolute necessity....and SHOULD both be standard equipment on this class/size vessel....I'll let you know over the weekend.....

thanks,

Is this the thread to start the bow thruster fight?? Or should we start a new thread? :smt014

Why not Gary............its sort of dull here with all the negative types pestering the membership at Boat/US, boatered, etc.

But my story and opinion has not changed..................!
