Carling USB Charger

Anyone else notice that the Carling ad says multiple places that "total" current output is 3.15 amps. Is that per port or for both?

iPad chargers are 2.1 amps.

My interpretation of the spec sheet is the 3.15amp is if only one thing is plugged in. If both are used its 2.1-2.4amp. Again, just an interpretation.

By the way Carling sent me a follow up e-mail that they are now out for distribution.

GREAT FIND! I'm SO in for this thanks guys!!

I just found this one, but I really like Carling as a Mfg.

Fairly clear to me from the spec... 3.15 amps total. So if you had two devices plugged in that would draw the same amount of current, each would be able to sink 1.575 amps. If you had only one device plugged in, it could sink up to 3.15 amps... plenty enough for your iPad.

Fyi: apple states your only grabbing 3.1 amps with the device screen off so If your using it as a chartplotter as i do your wasting your money at $55 each. I will install 2 Tallons in different locations for that price

Well that's a buzz kill. Guess I'll keep plugging the iPad into the 110 socket since I run the generator when cruising. Maybe then the cheaper CH4x4 above (or Carling if the price comes down) for phone and other small accessories.

That seems logical. Although the CH4x4 shown above splits it to 2.1amp and 1.0amp if you have two devices plugged in (according to the Q&A) in the link provided.

I should re-phrase my statement your not "grabbing" the amps your just not getting the full benefit of the charge while the screen is activated is what I should have stated.

An official iPad charger is 12 watt - which then outputs at most (@5v) 2.4 Amp - I do not have any issues powering my iPads with 2.4 Amp while running all day. The iPad will probably NOT eat more than 2.2-2.4 Amp if available. I have a big 6x2.4 Ah USB charger - and iPad rarely goes above 2 Amp anyway. iPhones 5/6's are limited to drawing about 0.5-0.8 A - where iPhone 6+ can eat up to about 1.5 A.

So 3.1 Amp for an iPad+iPhone is enough - no issues at all.

Only thing i dont like is with these mounted on the dash you have wires hanging over your switches from the device your charging. Plus id like to have charging stations in different locations throughout the boat. Say at or near a counter/ shelf etc.

I installed and tested my usb charger today. Worked great, kept my ipad mini and my phone fully charged during 4.5 hours of use. Nice product.

Yes I did. Agree its a bit pricey, but worked as advertised and looks original. Very pleased.

I wish I had an extra opening in the dash I'd do it in a second.
