Can't remove my starter solenoid

Also, there's this orange and black wire at the top of the engine by distributor cap that isn't hooked up to anything. The end of it is just wrapped in electrical tape. Not sure if that's supposed to go somewhere or not

Just a final note for anyone that may have the same problem I'm having later and that finds their way to this thread: If you have a 2011 SeaRay 185 with a 4.3L Mercruiser Alpha One engine it it's very possible that you do not have a slave solenoid. I do not. I don't know why Mercruiser decided to do away with this for my particular engine model. I geuss to sell more starter solenoids.

I'm going to try some hillbilly hack I saw on youtube and if that doesn't work I'm going to suck it up, take it to the mechanic, bend over and prepare myself for rear entry. Thanks for trying to help me troubleshoot it to everyone that responded.

all have slave solenoids or slave relays. when you save the pics to photobucket use the last link to post them. no need to resize them.

In your last pic I see a relay at 5:00 see if that has the yellow/red and red wire on it

I don't see it. Can you circle it please? The only thing I see at 5pm is the 50A circuit breaker that has 2 red wires leading to it. The only thing in that general vicinity that has a yellow/red wire going to it is the power trim relay according to the part number

The relay is used for multiple applications ,your application is a slave relay. there is the yellow/red from the starter solenoid, the Red power feed, the small yellow/red from the ign switch, and the ground wire

the ign trips that relay and that relay trips the starter solenoid

With your lack of knowledge on the product you may benefit having the dealer make this repair..

Also used in Chevy Blazers for fuel pump relay and main power system relay

So, talk to me like a 3rd grader if you could. My battery is definitely good. When my buddy ran a screwdriver across the solenoid it turned the starter. He took that to mean that the starter was fine and that the solenoid was probably bad. Earlier in the post it was said that solenoids hardly ever go out on these and that it was most likely the slave/relay. Do I need to replace that part then? Specifically, the one we're talking about right now? The one that is saying part number 882751 is the "power trim relay?" And if so, is this a difficult process for someone with limited skills such as myself?
Thank you.

It may very well come to that but if you all are willing to help I'd like to learn. I plan on being a boat owner the rest of my life so I'd like to learn if I can.

All boat owner should know some basic trouble shooting. A lot of the manuals are still available on line if you know how to google them

That test if done correctly verifies the battery, battery connections, starter solenoid and starter are in working condition
If you get a soft click when you turn the key then look at the slave solenoid or relay.Jumping the red to the yellow/red at the slave should make the starter solenoid engage to spin the starter.
pm me a cell #

I can't do anything with that diagram but thank you all for your help none the less. Maybe I'll get there one day....errr year. I just became proficient at winterizing so this electrical stuff is probably a ways off for me.

Sorry Doctur. All I saw was your diagram at first. Didn't see your other post. Sent you a PM. Thanks!

very easy once you know how its wired and how it works.#30 and #87 are the main switch for whatever you want to turn on. 30 is the main power feed Red . 87 is the wire that goes to the starters solenoid Yellow/Red.
85 is the wire coming from the ign switch, 86 goes to ground
With the relay remove ,locate 30 and 87 and install a jumper. this should spin the starter,
If the relay clicks and nothing happens , the relay`s internal contacts are bad

It seems that the OP did not read all responses-in particular the post from Frank pointing out that the number on the relay crosses over to a different application than where it is used on his boat. He just doesn't want to locate and check this relay. It could possibly be neutral safety circuit as this is wired in to this relay circuit.
