the lock on the sliding cabin door was broken when we bought the boat....i thought about replacing the lock but after giving it some thought i think i will just leave the door unlocked when we are away from the boat to avoid damage to the lock/door from a would-be thief and if the marina personnel needed to get into the cabin in an emergency....

however, we stay on the boat most WE's when the weather is decent and i thought it would be nice to have a way to lock the cabin door from the inside at night while we are asleep....does anyone have an idea for a simple lock to accomplish this that would not look too gaudy?....i could replace the original door lock but they are pretty pricey and i think i should be able to accomplish my intentions fairly easily and relatively inexpensively....

thanks...

I think this was discussed before a few years ago, but if someone steals from an unlocked boat will the insurance company cover the loss?

good thought and question......even if the insurance did not cover the loss i would just as soon let the thief have a $150 flat screen TV and a $50 DVD player in lieu of having to replace a cabin door....other than the TV and DVD player there really is not much that has any value in the cabin that would be attractive to a thief....unless you also consider my 1/2 gallon of Jack Daniels...

to be honest i have not really looked too deep into what is wrong with the lock....it appears that the door was locked at some point and either the previous owner or a thief used something to force into the key slot to open the lock...my cabin door key will not even fit into the lock now...

i might be able to find a used lock at a salvage company....maybe i should just get over the cost and replace the original lock....i have wasted $125 on worse things....

thanks for the input...

Cliff, you take a same stand as I do with the boat. I'd rather them go down in there and steal the TV and the DVD player rather than wreck a door I can't replace. Lately, we've had break-ins into our dock. They've stolen all the booze out of the cabinets, and beer out of the fridge. So now were just going to take it home each week, and lock the fridge. Also, I just installed a camera system that will record it. All of us on the dock have already got a pretty good idea who did it. I know this has nothing to do with the lock, but I understand your standpoint.

Thanks guys....we are going to the boat later this morning....I will see if I can find a model # for the lock.....I don't usually cut corners on this kind of stuff so I will just replace the lock with either a new or used one.....

The plastic cover for our door latch is cracked, has a piece missing and has fallen off of the door latch. I looked into just replacing the plastic cover but apparently you can't do that (of course). I purchased this one: https://www.searay-parts.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=MF-05-530-24ProFlushStar

For $181 we'll have a new cabin latch and new keys. I feel better about it anyway because who knows how many other duplicates were made of our cabin keys? Also, it does appear that it was broken due to someone trying to force the lock open so it's probably best to replace the whole works anyway. I called the local Sea Ray dealer, gave them my hull ID and they gave me the correct part number.

Good luck!
