Buff Magic and Porter Cable 7424

This will work, but it will not work as well as a rotary. I would use the Porter Cable to apply your wax/polish after but invest in a rotary polisher if there is any oxidation at all on the boat for optimum results.

I have tried it with the Porter Cable, not the right tool for the job.

I will echo 370Carver's rotary buffer recommendation with Buff Magic. I bought a Shurhold Dual Action (random orbital) which I understand is very similar to the Porter Cable. It was great for applying polish but took too long with Buff Magic on my old 320 which was barely oxidized. This will be more of an issue when I move to AZ where the sun is much stronger than here. I was amazed at how old a lot of the boats looked due to oxidized gelcoat on ones no older than my 2006 320. I will definitely purchase a rotary to compound my new boat when it comes time.

Any recommendations then on a rotary buffer brand, size, etc? I have the same random orbital portal cable but I do not have a rotary buffer. I think my father has one I may ask and see what he uses.

I have always been comfortable with my Dewalt DWP849 polisher.

There is a really nice Makita and you can go cheap and buy a Harbor Freight polisher for 50 bucks or less. The H.F. polisher isnt anywhere as nice as the Dewalt or Makita but will get the job done cheap.

I am with Carver370. I use the Dewalt DW849. It has exactly what you need for reconditioning including wide range of variable speeds and all speeds are electronically controlled.

thanks a bunch for the recs

I guess I will own up... bought the Harbor Frt. I has been thru two boats so far and not burned up. It has an adjustable speed setting that actually works. Will let you know how far I get with it for the second season.

 I got caught up in the PC7424 fad also and was pretty disappointed with it. Works ok on the car though.

I bought the Harbor Freight rotary polisher for $50 and plan on using it the first week in April on the boat. Couldn't resist and used it on the dockbox last night and it seems to work just fine.

+1 I also was pretty disappointed......its ok for just wax only....also bought the harbor freight rotary on sale for $35 you can't beat it!

+2 for the PC. I do use it however to apply liq wax with a white foam pad and a Milwaukee rotary buffer with a 3M Superbuff pad to buff. This has been the fastest/bestest system for me. Like all cleaning task, the more often you do it, the easier it is.

If you want to put hair on your chest, go buy a Milwaukee Polisher. It's a heavy beast, but you feel like a man after slinging it around all day.........A tired man, but a man nontheless!!!

I bought one in '99, and used to do 20 boats a year, some multiple times per year with it. It's probably got 1000 hours on it!. Last year I replaced the brushes, and that's it.

It's probably overkill, but I like items that don't fail. I'm not saying the DeWalt isn't a good unit, because it is......The Milwaukee is just my preference.

I bought the H F one. Keep the speed between 1 & 2. IT works great! If you got o fast with the speed it does not give it time to work slow is better and Buff Magic works great. Tried many different compounds to remove oxidation, this works the best. Even if you spray gelcoat and need to buff it out works well.

As the OP asked about buff magic, I won't hijack the thread and start talking about how Presta Super Cut puts it to shame.

I'm using 7424 and Makita, very happy with both.

Well being the great lakes area this time of year I can't do much with the boat but I can practice on my fibreglass shower, I will be picking up some Buff Magic at the boat in Detroit hopefully. Still undecided on Polish.
I think I need more pads for the Porter Cable or additionally invest in the Makita or Dewalt.

Talked to a dealer in Michigan and he said that the Presto Super Cut is a very aggressive product, is this what I want to be using on a boat in good condition?

If in good shape (only light oxidation) use 3M Finesse It. Works great with a rotary at slow speed (say 1500 RPM). Then a good wax. Good luck!
