Brunswick passport warranty. Stay away...stay far away.

Oil consumption can be a sign of bad rings, overheating, or excessive idling among others. All of these are signs of a worn engine and not covered. I would deny the claim if one of our dealers entered what you stated as a claim. What is the compression, is there engine oil blowby, what is the operating temp history according to the stored computer data? Do you have service records? What type of oil/fuel are you using, when was the last time the cooling system was serviced? Are you seeing blue smoke on start up?

All of these would be questions I would have before considering valve failure.
If they pull the head and in fact find a bad valve then the repair can be validated and all related repair can be covered if there are no mitigating issues as listed above.

This is only my opinion after may years of reviewing these type of claims.

The motors have been serviced by dealer, 380 hrs fresh water usage over 5 years started consuming more and more oil for the last 2 years told dealer and he said mercury said it was normal mercury finally agreed to do a leak test on both motors after their warranty expired and we found 50% blowby in 1 cylinder in port engine and 20% blowby in another cylinder different engine computer print out stated boat never ran over 3500 rpm never overheated, oil changed every 50 miles. It sounds like a Stuck valve it never smokes. Carbon buildup?

Meant oil change every 50 hours. Last season boat motors were using a quart ever 10 hrs or so. Mercruiser stated that was within their specs but did seem high therefore they ordered a leak test even though motors were out their warranty and when told of results, they said sorry out of warranty! So then passport stated we don't cover oil consumption so now I have to pay to have engines tore down to see what the problem is. They aren't very old to have this big of problems.

eauty,
I just PM'd you and hope the info is able to get you some resolution. All engine manufactures have oil consumption guidelines. Since the boat was new. A compression test should show all cylinders within 15% of each other. The one cylinder that is at 50% is concerning. If you had high idle time since new then the engines may take a long time to break in however they should still be within the 15% range for all cylinders.

If you are burning 1 qt. in 10 hours you should be seeing blue smoke. I would think that the smoke is being shielded in the water as the exhaust is below the water line. Do you see any oil slick behind the boat, on the water, after idling at the dock or on the hook?

I'm not sure what is meant by a leak test. I think you are meaning a compression test. As I stated in the PM, the dealer will have history of this issue so some policy money may be available from Brunswick to cover a percentage or all of the repair. This is only my opinion as I do not work for them. Sad to say though at this point the engines may need to be disassembled to find the issue. The onus of payment will be on you until a clear issue is found and the dealer brings a Sea Ray rep to the table for help.

I had a claim come in for high oil consumption on a machine with 1500 hours on it. Found out through the computer data that the machine had been idling for 75% of its total running hours. In this case the engine never broke in. After running the machine for 500 hours like he rented it, the issue went away. This is not to say this is what happened to your engine but it is an example of the consumption type questions we get at the corporate level.

We recently had multiple transmission failures on one piece of equipment that was out of warranty. We found that the thrust washers in the engine have failed and was causing lateral shaft pressure on the transmissions. We picked up the tab for 4 transmissions and a new engine due to this after warranty failure.
Cost of each trans 40,000.00 USD one engine 65,000.00 USD. Customer satisfaction, priceless.

Best wishes again in this matter.

Here is a link to GM oil consumption allowable chart.

Scroll to the bottom of the page for their calculation table. I attached thier statement on this matter.

"Oil consumption of 0.946L/379L of fuel (1 qt./100 gal.) or less is considered acceptable."
