bringing a potbelly pig on boat

With any animal on a boat they slide. Cats seem to have the best grip but you land up with torn fabric. We leave our animals at home. We go for up to 3 months. We feel they have more fun looking after the house. I have seen too many people loading large dogs in dingy in the rain to know it is more fun to sit in a warm dry boat than go to shore to have an animal do its thing. How may of you leave your animals at home?

Agreed. We leave ours at home. It just makes our boating experience easier and one less thing to worry about. Minimal worries and maximum relaxation is what boating is all about for us. Tending to a pets needs can be demanding.

I can certainly understand those who bring their pets though. We love ours as much as the next pet owner and we sometimes bring our dog for a short evening cruise but not for overnights or all day adventures, especially on hot summer days.

I used to take mine but had to stop. The problem wasn't him on the boat it was the people that would not behave properly around him when he was on shore. He is a protective dog and was always leashed but people would come rushing up to him, arms outstretched..oh, look at the cute dog..even though I would tell them not to. He would of course go in to protect mode and scare the crap out of them. It was too stressful protecting him from the people so he stays home now.

Yes they are called Hoyer lift and we are looking at portable ones as well. It will be a manual devices and something we can make so it can be sturdy and compact. Thanks.
Be careful of the Hoyer lifts. I am a Physical Therapist by trade and the Hoyer lift is used in many hospital and therapeutic settings. The problem with the hoyer lift is the sling system. It is not uncommon to hear about a patient actually sliding out of the sling and landing on the floor. I am not sure if this would be a problem with a 4 legged fellow as the center of gravity is obviously different. If you are heading in this direction you should also look into the Invacare lift as it has a better sling system ( at least for bipeds) that reduces the risk of accidents. Good Luck!!
BTW: Don't get too bothered by all the Tomfoolery. The vast majority has no malice intended. As for Gary well.......

I want to thank everyone for the amazing support and awesome suggestions. I think cpt sundancer has a pretty good idea of what way to go and not go now. Our pet has been going out on the river with us since he was nearly 6 weeks old. Since we normally beach and enjoy the sand, shore and sun during the day, he just spends his evenings on board with us. Mostly for his safety from the wildlife predators in the area. Of course also to keep him from wandering off. Often if we are just out for the day, he is left home. Or if we go over night and he has someone at home with him he stays at home as well. It is when we go for weekends or long weekends or extend stays he goes with us. We do get a lot of people going by who see him on the beach and come close enough to take his picture or even come to the beach and ask if they can pet him. He is very passive and people friendly. He enjoys the attention and the scratches and pets. I know well enough never say never about any animal, so we are always aware and alert as to any new situation that arises for any of our animal family members. Again thanks to all the sincere comments. I do apologize to all for the misinterpretation of how my comment about comparing injured animals or handicapped person came off, in no way would I ever make fun of either or condone making fun of either. As for apologizing for my husband cpt, sundance and his comments, insults and threats, well I will not do that. I will try to explain, his comments where made towards the adults that where insulting me, his wife, he come home from work and read and got upset as he felt the attacks where being made against his wife and our values of our animal family. As for making "threats", it was his attempt of reverse humor, all that made fun of the pig ( most in very bad form). We would NEVER approve of animal violence against humans, as we would never approve of human violence against animals. As for insulting a young person, a teenager. I am positive at the time Rick was totally unaware of the posters age. this post/board got totally out of hand and off track by MANY of us, myself included. With that I wish ALL a very Happy and Safe Holiday Season.

This was last fall, when Ko-Jac was a TAD smaller. A local radio show had a contest "Strangest thing in your Fridge. So we posed the pig, and won VIP Tickets to the Vikings/Cowboys Playoff in the Dome. Yes we exploited our Pig for personal gain!

How'd he feel being in the frig next to his brother?

Nice touch with the bacon in the one shot.

We also had to stop. We have a 105# (he use to weigh 125#) Akita who doesn't play well with other animals...AT ALL! We keep him on a cable and every body else at the island just lets their dogs run loose even though there is a leash law in at Disappearing Island. Well all is well till they venture up to "Max" and then all hell breaks loose! He likes people (most of them) but will not tolerate other animals.

We are so very lucky, up here on the upper Mississippi with all the little back channels. Our little Searay has a 8.5 beam ( ok could be 8 that is cpt sundancer area), we can get on to secluded and private beaches so we dont have to worry about other animals to much. So Typically it is just family and our pets. Which our family all have a dog or two that join us.
