The gear lube monitor hose on my B3 was cut by fishing leader this past summer. To save the season I drained the reservoir and plugged the hose with a stainless steal screws and small clamps. I then pressure tested the drive to make sure it was not leaking, seemed fine.

This spring I'd like to replace or repair the hose. I'm not sure how to get to the fitting on the drive where the hose connects, any assistance would be appreciated. I was thinking of trying to repair the hose with a SS fitting and a couple of clamps, do you think a repair would hold up?

The boat is kept on a trailer and operated mostly in salt water.

Thank you in advance.

Tom

Your better off just replacing the hose, or you'll be wondering about it the whole time your trying to enjoy your water time.

Where it connects to the drive? Should just be a brass barb fitting that the hose slides over. Then your choice of a zip-tie or the mercury ratching hose clamp:grin:

OT....big block in a 23' huh? I bet she moves along pretty good

Just wondering if I have to pull the drive to get to the fitting, it's too cold outside now to crawl around under the boat right now.

And yes, she moves along nicely :)

No, removal of the sterndrive is not necessary. It is a lot easier with it in the max trailer poisition. Simply cut your ziptie and pull the hose off.

Remind you the fitting is barbed, so it will take a little twist and pull.

I got a good question or a dumb one...where do we recycle the old gear lube?

Any place that sells motor oil....well in NY thats how it is.

If you sell it, you have to recycle it aswell.

I finally got under the boat today to look into replacing the drive oil reservoir hose and I see where the hose connects to the drive but I can see where it passes through the transom. Does the hose simply pass through or is there a fitting on the transom?

Tom

Barbed fitting...you can see it in this pic I took while pulling my gimbal bearing. It is to the right of the gimbal bearing. The oil hose is cut in this pic. Yes..I sanded and painted my gimbal housing after the pic.

If I pull the drive will I be able to see the hose fitting without removing the bellows?

For good access pull the drive & loosen bell housing. I think you may be able to get at it without pulling anything...but it will be tight. No need to remove bellows.
