Bought this last night

For the dads out there who buy their kids their first car for them, and it's a hot rod, why do you do that? I dealt with a kid in the neighborhood about 20 years ago whose dad bought him a hot rod mustang for his first car. He raced it through the neighborhood, ran loud exhaust on it, was pretty much a rebel an idiot with the car in the neighborhood. He almost hit me once while I was ony riding lawn mower, we ended up in court, he got a felony dropped to a misdemeanor. That's what I learned from the mom they bought him the race car so him and the dad could bond.
My kids got beaters for their first cars. And they paid me back for them. Closest to a hot rod was my son had a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am GT but he had been racing karts since he was about 8 so he had his time to drive fast (but I'm sure he still did it with the GT....lol)

My first car was a 1980 Ford Fiesta. This is the exact color combo. Beautiful cream color with a brown stripe.

If it’s any consolation, at 17, I drove it like a jerk. It was a 4 speed, so I could squeal the tires (front wheel drive). I tore up the local park, etc…..until I blew it up. Not one of my proudest moments, but it happened. Then I was out of a car for a year. Idiots will be idiots until they learn from their mistakes. Sorry for the hijack

From my own experience, I was really hesitant about letting my son drive my v8 mustang convertible with dual exhaust and chrome wheels for his junior and senior year in HS. But one day when I was at work he asked my wife to drive him to Football package. Instead of giving him a ride, she tossed him the keys to my Mustang!

We kept him on a pretty short leash as our house was only about 5 miles away from the HS

Nice.

To our regret, my wife introduced our 16 yo son to Bring a Trailer. Now he's fixated no 1965/66 Mustangs and is bombarding me with one's he's finding. He desperately wants one. Or a new Bronco. Nice try, kid.

My first car was a 66 coupe. Still have it but never drive it. It’s actually a great first car. The 289 is anemic if stock, you can’t hardly get enough power to be a handful…. There are numerous safety upgrades you can do, including dual master cylinder brakes, fuel tank upgrades, and shoulder harnesses for the front seats. The 66 had standard seatbelts, and collapsible steering column as added safety over the 65.

The biggest thing to look for is the cowl condition. The factory didn’t coat those (just bare steel) and they all rusted. That’s a huge job and many have holes that end up with wet carpet and mold if it gets rained on.

HAHA - my first car was also a 1980 Ford Fiest -- pretty good car - I drove the hell out of it.

My first car was a 66 Ford XL with a 289...

We would definitely want to do some safety upgrades, high back seats, 3 point belts, maybe a collapsible steering column. Disc brakes, at least on the front. I've been talking to my wife's cousin who is a huge muscle car guy (writes about cars for a living) and he's been helping to put some stuff into perspective for us.

That said, @Ididntdoit sent me a car he saw at a show over the weekend. Blue 66 coupe, lots of upgrades like a new short block 5.0 with EFI, 4 speed OD automatic, new rear end, AC, high back seats. Basically all the stuff that makes it a more modern car. Looks like a nice driver-quality car. Some questions about a leaking rear main seal though.

My first car was a 1972 Olds Cutlass S. My grandfather bought it in 1973 then my aunt drove it for awhile then I bought it off her for $200 in 1984. Put about $500 in it. My uncle painted it and me and my dad did the mechanical work. 2 months later a wealthier guy in town blew through a stop sign and I t-boned him. His insurance company totaled it and gave me $1500. I bought it back for $50 and bought a front clip for $200. Uncle painted the clip then I used the extra money to upgrade the stereo and newer tires and dual exhaust. Drove it for 3 more years then sold it to a friend for $700...lol

I certainly hope you weren’t referring to me. My son is a hard working respectful young man. He knows the first time he gets in any trouble or I hear any complaints. The car will be gone and he’ll be riding the bus to school. And he knows better than to even mention anything about a loud exhaust.

I was not specifically referring to anybody with my question, sorry for any misunderstanding.

Some kids can handle it. My old man was a hot rodder and taught me to drive a standard when I was 10. I only got limited use of the muscle cars and street rods though :(

He did loan us an all black '34 5-window coupe to drive from the church to the reception at our wedding

My kids all got used cars and had to re-pay me for them. My oldest got a 1995-ish Pontiac Sunbird for about $1000. The next got something. Can't remember now what his first car was but he paid me back. My son got the Grand Am GT that was worth about $2000 and paid me back and my daughter got a 1995-ish Olds Alero for about $1000. They all worked at McDonalds and all used their own money to upgrade after those cars. Now my oldest has a 2021 Tundra, next has a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500, son has 2021 2500 Ram Cummins and my daughter has a 2016 Acura something all wheel drive. She also had a 2016 Wrangler she bought brand new but sold it recently and put that money into her rentals

An Alero? Was that a punishment car? My sister in law had one of those and it was utter garbage, parts literally falling off of it.

lol. It was actually my daughter-in-laws car. Well her and my step-son were only going out together at the time but she was selling it and the price was right. My daughter actually rear ended a mail truck and bent the hood up slightly right in the middle so I sat on the hood and bounced a little to flatten it back out...lol. After that she bought a Nissan Xterra with 200,000 miles on it and drove it a year or two until she bought her new 2016 Wrangler

Honestly, that sounds like a pretty solid (albeit heavily modified) car. The one caution I’d have for that would be workmanship on the 5.0 install because if there is an issue you will really be sorting through it. As for the oil leak, a rear main seal sounds horrendous, but on an older car it really isn’t bad. I had a ring gear issue on mine once and as a 16 year old was able to replace it myself by dropping the transmission down and getting in there. I did that in an afternoon and was at a car show with it the next morning.

Agreed. I'm trying to get info on the engine build, like who did it, source of the short block, source of the other parts, etc. Not sure if I can get it because the guy who did it isn't in the picture.

For the main seal leak, the current owner said it's leaked a few cups of oil since in the 1000 miles he'd driven it since the transmission rebuild. He said it pretty casually, but that's a whole lot of oil to be leaking. I have to get some clarity if he really said "cups" or "drips". There's reportedly 5000 miles on the newly built engine so having that kind of leak isn't a great sign for the overall build.

Love Mustangs! This 72 belonged to my Dad, he bought it brand new, kept it up pretty well and occasionally still drove it until he died at age 84. It took me several years to restore it and I hope one of my kids will want it some day when I am gone.

Picked up this 66 Mustang yesterday as my son’s first car, same one I mentioned earlier. On the ferry right home now from CT to NY. Since we were having some torrential rain, I drove the car while my son followed in my Maxima. Was interesting driving with the single speed wipers and the glass fogging up. I had a stack of napkins do I could clear the window. Once I got a better feel for how it handled, it was nice hour long drive to Bridgeport.

It’s not a perfect car, but a nice daily driver. We’ve started a list of things to repair/upgrade. Near the top is a new steering column with the integrated electric power steering. The manual rack and pinion is heavy.

Looks really nice. What was the hour long ride to Bridgeport?
