Bought this last night

Oh ya! He gonna get laid. Put a box of condoms in gloves box.
He’s such a nerd he really doesn’t know what to do with a girl that way.

His three best friends are girls (and very pretty) but he doesn’t want to screw up the friendships. He’s wicked smart (AP science classes, wants to go to RPI, Columbia or Princeton) plays baseball and football, but socially a bit awkward and self conscious.

Damn, you are an awesome dad getting that for your son's first car.
It’s his mom‘s fault. She loves cars and her first car was a 1978 mustang.

to be honest, I wanted to get him something more safe and practical like a Subaru. But this is going to let us work on some projects together.

Picked up this 66 Mustang yesterday as my son’s first car, same one I mentioned earlier. On the ferry right home now from CT to NY. Since we were having some torrential rain, I drove the car while my son followed in my Maxima. Was interesting driving with the single speed wipers and the glass fogging up. I had a stack of napkins do I could clear the window. Once I got a better feel for how it handled, it was nice hour long drive to Bridgeport.

It’s not a perfect car, but a nice daily driver. We’ve started a list of things to repair/upgrade. Near the top is a new steering column with the integrated electric power steering. The manual rack and pinion is heavy.

have you considered adopting? I’m available. :)

What year motor is that HO?

A/C , but no power steering?

The provenance if the engine is a little murky because the car has been through a few hands, and the guy who did the upgrades had to sell the car to pay some debts. The engine is reported to be a crate motor with about 1100 miles on it, and an ECU/parts from a roughly 1988 fox body.

The choice of manual steering is odd. They put in a manual Total Control products rack. I would not have it done that. Turns out the AC needs some work. It seemed ok when we test drove it. Now it’s blowing hotter as the engine warms up.

That’s gorgeous and one of my favorite colors for a vehicle!

I agree. It would definitely be a car that would make you feel proud to accomplish projects on it. Hopefully that young man can get bit by that bug cause it will give him lifelong good memories.

He spent the evening in the garage cleaning the inside and polishing the chrome bits - even though it was 85 and 100% humidity. As I write this, I can see him on our driveway cam working on installing new windshield washer hoses and nozzles. In part, he wants to use working on the car as a boost for his applications to engineering programs.

Looks really nice. My son wanted to learn how to do his own work on his cars. I gave him the space. When he got to his wits end he would clean up and come lay on the couch in my office while I was working and tell me where he was stuck. Took a couple times to realize that was his way of asking for help. Then I'd go out to the garage and solve his problem. He has turned into a good wrench, and his repayment for my help is working on the boat. The day my Dad figured out I could turn a wrench was the day that he went from family mechanic to shop foreman. Just passing the torch.:D

Looks like a good start! Not too flashy, just classy. Looks like it has shoulder belts and headrests retrofitted which is nice. I’ve got a lot of early Mustang stuff, books and manuals, not for sale but let me know if you guys get to a point where you need some help, I’ll copy procedures and such to send you if you need them.

Send him on over to Kettering University (formerly General Motors Institute) in a few years. All the automotive he can handle!

Thanks! The seller included a shop manual so we have a good start.

Unfortunately, the car is going to be parked for a few weeks after it failed the NYS safety inspection. There's a problem with steering rack causing it to bind and not return to center, and there's a poorly done repair on the frame where the steering attaches on the left side. If that well fails the steering could collapse.

The steering is binding because the rack mounts suffered an impact, and bent the bolts back a bit from vertical. That's messing up the geometry for the two u-joints and making them bind. I hadn't driven a manual steering car so didn't really know the stiffness was abnormal.

My mechanic got it up on the left and showed me everything. He thinks its fixable but not safe to drive right now.

On the plus side it give us some time to do other stuff, like replace some trim, pull the heater box for repair, and get the cigarette lighter working. We already installed some nice LED headlights that are dramatically better.

I don't know if he eventually wants to do automotive as a career but certainly its an option for him. His top pick for college at the moment is Rensselaer Polytech. Our tour guide told said they have a fully equipped shop used for projects like their race car program and students in the car club use on weekends for their own cars. That certainly has a newfound appeal for my son right now....

Yeah but do they have their own test track on campus? :):)
