This is my second year with a 2006 240DA that I keep in a slip. At the end of last season, I paid someone to prep and apply bottom paint over the existing paint. At this point, there are at least 2 coats of bottom paint on the boat, maybe more.

Should I be concerned about loading up multiple coats over the years? If so, is there a general guideline (i.e. maximum number of coats to apply before stripping and applying from scratch)? What are the downsides of applying multiple coats over the years?

Thank you.

Do you know what kind of paint you had put on? Ablative? Hard?

Ablative paint wears off, so you really don't have a buildup issue, if you use the boat. Hard paint will build up. So it really depends on the paint you used.

I understand from my dealer that Pettit Hydrocoat is the standard for SeaRay and the only paint they have used for a number of years. So, that was likely what you started with and perhaps what was used for the re-painting. Hydrocoat is an ablative.

marinas charge extra for ablative paint...I would expect that if you did not specify ablative it was not used... In the future use ablative and you should not have problems with build up...

Thanks for the replies. I found out that an Interlux ablative paint was applied last year.

My only follow up question is this: the bottom paint looks to be in good shape although there are a few spots where it has come off. The boat was used for about 90 hours in fresh water and slightly brackish water this season. Is it normal to repaint the entire bottom in this situation or can I get away with touching up the spots where the paint came off and go another year? Are there any specific factors in making this decision? Thanks.

If you put paint on last year, all you should have to do is touch up the spots. You'll want to rough up the spots with 80 grit and then wipe the spot with mineral spirits before you paint.

I repaint the entire bottom every 3-4 years with ablative paint. In the off years I paint the smile and the water line where it is visible while the boat is in its slip.
