Both engine will not start Cummins 480ce

This is the override switch attached image.

On my 390DA...absolutely nothing would start...blower, mains, genny. Spent many tech hours digging finally arriving at the auto fire suppression. Once fixed, all back to normal.

The reason I suggest some heat before override is I wonder if there is now an active alarm at the helm (smartcraft) and until cleared, the override won't cut it. Not certain...just a thought. Either approach is easy but as bmac stated, do not pull the manual pin which is located separately anyways.

If that's the case can you re-boot the smartcraft display by flipping its breaker off, then on again?

I will let everyone know if the bypass "fixes" my problem. It all make sense that it should. Engines, genset and blowers are tied to the fire suppression system through the module in the dc breaker box (bilge). I think my bypass is located under the dash above the manual release handle, I think . It definitely is not on the dash as the manual indicates. I have cockpit air and the vent is located where the bypass would normally be.

You might want to call Sea-Fire technical support, I spoke to them once and they were very helpful. They actual offered that if I got my digital volt meter out they would to stay on the line and walk me through a complete system diagnosis.

Well guys I called my marina and told them to use the bypass switch for the fire suppression. IT WORKED! Boat started right up, genny ran fine and no alarms. Funny thing when I spoke to the mechanic after, he said they had another boat with the same problem...today. Flipped the switch and boat started. This boat had already be run a week ago. I beginning to see a pattern here...Temps here are in the low 40's, maybe the Halon is condensing just enough to trigger the lockout. I am going to monitor the situation and see if I can reset it back to normal when it warms up a bit or after the engines have heated up....by the looks of our weather here in Upstate NY warm weather might not come till July or August.

Thanks again for your input.

Excellent and glad that was it. Keep an eye on it to see when the normal day-to-day temps rise. If the pressure limit is still not satisfied, it will(should) be fixed as you run the risk of having a very bad outcome in the event of a fire and subsequent insurance investigation. Just not worth the liability given the value of the vessel and moreover, the lives on board.

Does anyone know what model year SR started using this safety mechanism? Just another thing to put on the differential diagnosis when engines won't start. My '89 had a halon system but I doubt the technology was in use that far back in history.

My dealer called me today after launching my boat and said the boat will not start. Neither engine? It cranks but will not start. The boat was stored inside heated for the winter. I believe they disconnect the batteries over the winter. Does anyone have an idea what may be the issue. I am sure it is something simple seeing both motors fail to run.

One thing that is common to both engines on my 460DA is the fire extinguisher system. If a fire is sensed the engines shut down. The failure of the relay that causes this is fairly common. Look to see if you have an override switch for you system. My switch is next to the systems monitor panel.

Ooops! Should have read all three pages. As Gilda Radner would say "nevermind"

I believe the shutdown is only required on Diesel boats. A gas engine should stall out as soon as the extinguisher discharges.

Fred
Is that b/c the halon exhausts the oxygen? If so, don't diesel engines need even more air than gas engines?

As far as I know Ron yes.
A diesel would keep running and exhaust the Halon quickly which may allow the fire to continue.

On my 390DA w/diesels, any discharge of the fire suppression system will cause an automatic shutdown of the engines, blowers, etc...

Glad to hear that you got everything running. Issues at splash can be maddening, expecially when nothing was touched. Have a great season.....
