I woke up this morning to my cell phone ringing. A fellow boater asked, "is your boat stored in Pt. Lambton?". "Yes, Why??" I replied. "Well there's a large storage shed on fire and dozens of boats are currently on burning!".
It turned out to be the storage building just across the road from mine, but then my thoughts turned to other fellow boaters since I knew that some stored their boats in one of the two large new buildings. Was their boat in the one engulfed in flames?
Sadly yes, the building involved held many of my friend's boats and the entire building later collapsed in a burning heap of debris - still burning at this time. All 65 or so boats in the building totally destroyed according to initial reports. :smt089
Some of the boats lost were a 42' Carver (mid 80's in mint shape), a newer 43 Carver Motoryacht owned by a young family with two kids, a 2000 340 Dancer, mid 90's 330 Dancer, and many others from our marina. My hope is that these fine folk will choose to replace their boats once insurance settles, but I believe some will take this opportunity to exit boating. Time will tell.
Very sad indeed, but no one was hurt - thank God!
