I woke up this morning to my cell phone ringing. A fellow boater asked, "is your boat stored in Pt. Lambton?". "Yes, Why??" I replied. "Well there's a large storage shed on fire and dozens of boats are currently on burning!".

It turned out to be the storage building just across the road from mine, but then my thoughts turned to other fellow boaters since I knew that some stored their boats in one of the two large new buildings. Was their boat in the one engulfed in flames?

Sadly yes, the building involved held many of my friend's boats and the entire building later collapsed in a burning heap of debris - still burning at this time. All 65 or so boats in the building totally destroyed according to initial reports. :smt089

Some of the boats lost were a 42' Carver (mid 80's in mint shape), a newer 43 Carver Motoryacht owned by a young family with two kids, a 2000 340 Dancer, mid 90's 330 Dancer, and many others from our marina. My hope is that these fine folk will choose to replace their boats once insurance settles, but I believe some will take this opportunity to exit boating. Time will tell.

Very sad indeed, but no one was hurt - thank God!

Seems odd all the boats catching fire lately.....:smt009

I'm glad your boat is safe and also thankful no one was injured...

I lost my 1998 Chaparral Signature 300 in mint condition and left everything on the boat:( Trying to deal with the insurance company now and I know it's going to cost me money.
As of right now I'm looking to buy a Sea Ray

Sorry to hear about your boat Dan. I hope things go well dealing with your insurance claim so you can get into a Sea Ray in time for spring launch!

Sorry for you loss. Maybe when all is done you could share about the pitfalls of your coverage that made it cost you? We all look for the best price insurance but maybe in the long run that isn't best.

The lights used in my storage building are the type that need 3-4 minutes to warm up before becoming bright. I've seen them in many commercial buildings such as sports arenas. Sounds like a fluke to me...

I saw your post about this in the Chap forum and felt bad for you especially since you spent so much money this season on upgrades/replacements. Hopefully your insurance settlement will allow you to replace it with as good or better boat. You are moving in the right direction by considering a Sea Ray. In my opinion they do a better job on cruisers than Chaparral. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for all the support, tomorrow insurance is supposed to be settling up with the majority of the money. I am short on what I invested but it will be a big help. We are on the lookout for a boat and narrowed it down to a 2000-2002 Sea Ray Sundancer 310. I look forward to being part of the forum and all the extra knowledge here will be a big help.

Again thanks for all the kind words, it's amazing how attatched you can get to a boat.

Hey Dan, glad to hear things are progressing quickly with the insurance claim. Hopefully you'll be able to find the perfect boat with plenty of time to get is ready for an early spring launch!

I'll let you know if I hear of any 310's.

There's a couple from the US that stores their 1993 440 there do you know if it was in that building. I ask because they had it for sale and the wife and I looked at it when it was in the water. They said they stored it every winter in Canada and I asked why, they said it was way cheaper and the inside storage can't be beat. I can't remember if it was heated or not. I asked how his insurance would handle a loss and he was not sure if he would be covered or not. A friend in NY state wanted to store his in Quebec and was told by his insurance that he would have to get a policy in Canada to store it there. We sure did like that boat, the wife even phoned our marina and asked if the new slips they were making could hold this boat.
