i know there are tons of threads and lots of links online regarding name change and the process/ceremony you need to go through to do it properly......BUT my question which i havent been able to find a answer for is as follows:
do i have to use the name i used on my old boat and put a "2" or a "3" after it depending on how many boats ive had with that name or can i make a completley new name.....
not totally sure i dont want to use the old name but would just like to know if its even a possibility..

thanks!!!

Totally up to you. Old Name 1, 2, 3, etc. or a New Name. I have never heard any different. The ceremony "rules" only apply to removing and re-naming a boat.

We are on NANSEA III, but choose to go with just plain old NANSEA... Seems to me that it does not matter to me or others, how many boats I had with the same name... We did not document our names....

Just performed this ceremony on Saturday afternoon before we headed out for a nice cruise! From what I read, it doesn't matter what the new name is...just make sure there is no evidence of the old name on board!

Its your boat...name it as you feel appropriate. But like another poster stated, don't have anything left over that has the old name on it (boarding mats, towels, etc), as that's just cheesy!

Only question I would have....is the boat documented with the Coast Guard, if so not sure what that does for renaming the boat. Otherwise it is your boat now and name her what every you want, this should help you http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/rename.htm
If it's documented, and you just bought it, you should have gotten a USCG Bill of Sale (form CG-1340)notarized, from the previous owner. With that and the USCG Application for Exchange (form CG-1258) you apply for transfer of documentation. In Block A on the CG-1258 you put the Vessel name. If your are going to rename it, just put the new name with the old name in parenthesis. The previous owner needs to take his documentation form, sign it and send it to the USCG Documentation Center in West Virginia.
